While the Ann Arbor Art Fair tends to
lend sparkle to the eyes of city
businesspeople, and city politicians
assume the benevolent, kindly spirit of
Christmas present, the mere mention of
the four-day summer affair makes cer-
tain townspeople froth at the mouth,
spew vile curses and momentarily lose
all sense of reality.
But it's difficult to realize why
anyone living in Ann Arbor-an ex-
tremely quiet, almost boring place to
raise children, would not love the ex-
citement of an art fair, especially in
light of the community's cultural in-

The benefits derived from the Art
Fair are not always obvious to the
visiting art critics who descend upon
Ann Arbor from the state's outlying
farm districts dressed in the traditional
critic's guise-white patent leather
shoes, green and white checked slacks
(slightly belled), a green and white
short-sleeved pin-striped shirt open at
the collar to reveal an eggshell-white
Hanes undershirt.
During the Art Fair several of Ann
Arbor's main thoroughfares are closed
to all except pedestrian traffic. Due to
the disastrous condition of the city's
streets most Ann Arbor residents are
