BRITISH OPEN ENTERS FOURTH DAY

ST. ANDREWS (AP)-Tom Watson
pulled himself together after four shaky|
holes, fought his way to a wind-blown, 2-
under-par 70 and tied the gangling
Peter Losterhuis for the third-round
lead yesterday in the jammed-up 107th
British Open Golf Championship.
"My mind was wandering," said
Watson. "I just didn't feel proper. I
really didn't get organized until the bir- .
die on the fifth hole. I don't know what
was wrong. I just couldn't get my mind
on what I was doing.
Oosterhuis, a 6-foot-4 Englishman
who once dominated Europen golf and
then tried the American tour with indif-
ferent succuess, had a solid, no-bogey
69 and tied Watson's 54-hole total of 211.
That's 5 under par on the historic Old
Course at St. Andrews, 6,933 yards of
mounds and dunes and hollows and .
swales that served as the birthplace of
golf.
But there were four more men at 212
and four more at 213, leaving an inter-
national field of 10-six of them
Americans-locked within 2 shots of
each other going into today's final
round of the chase for this ancient title. ars

Tied at 212, a single stroke back, were
Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw, Simon
Owen of New Zealand and Isac Aoki of
Japan. Aoki and Crenshaw, who shared
the secound round lead, had 73s in the AP°Photo

BOSTON (AP) - Red Auerbach
spurned an offer to run the New York
Knicks and said yesterday he will stay
with the Boston Celtics, seeking to
rebuild the former NBA powerhouse
under its new owners.
Only three days ago, the Celtics'
president and general manager was
ready to jump ship, furious at new
owner John Y. Brown for swinging a
major player trade without giving the
legendary NBA wheeler-dealer advan-
ce notice.
BROWN SAID in a telephone inter-
view from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., that
he and Auerbach so far have "an oral
understanding," not a formal written
contract.

said. "It just took some time to get to
know each other."

AUERBACH SAID he was flattered by
the Knicks' offer, made Thursday at the
apartment of Madison Square Garden

"Money wasn't even mentioned,"
Auerbach said, adding that he could not
yet reveal which other NBA club also
made an offer. Auerbach also backed
off from an employment package he
proposed to CBS-TV.
