After Co.1lin and his follow- ers arrived the more noteworthy oc- currences seemed to take place in the audience and not on the podium where the brownshirts gathered. Standing behind a podium encircled by four rows of police officers, featured. speaker Frank Collin began his address under a banner proclaiming "White Power, Welcome to 1978 and the white revolution." "What we want to know is, are you ready for white power?" he asked the crowd. "The blacks have been mar- ching into our neighborhoods for years. Next time, we're going to march into the black neighborhoods." Collin continued speaking in that vein, characterizing Chicago as "the worst nigger city I've ever seen," and blamed blacks for the city's problems. COLLIN'S VOICE was frequently? obliterated by the chanting crowd. Fist- fights and screaming arguments were not uncommon and the tense crowd surged toward each altercation, straining for a release. "White Power, White Power, White Power now," screamed a coalition of youths, many of whom sported shirts emblazoned with swastikas. "Down with the Jews, Down With the Jews resounded ominously through the park. One of the tattooed youths explained his purpose in attending the rally and his support of the White Youth Gang assemblage: "Niggers. "JEWISH REAL ESTATE guys buy our houses and sell them to Niggers. They are trying to take our park away." As thechants of "Jews Go Home" and "Six Million weren't enough" picked up momentum the youths joined in, eagerly raising their hands in a fist salute, punctuating the beat of the chants. Ron Kenkat, a Marquette Park resident in his mid 20's who earlier had discussed his affiliation with the Nazi Party, leaned over and gestured toward the anti-Nazi faction, "These Jews wouldn't even make good lampshades" he said. - .The group'to, which he was referring, Hatikvah, the Israeli national anthem. A WOMAN'S VOICE pierced through the air. "Kill the Nazis, she repeatedly screamed. "Kill the Nazis." The anti-Nazi forces began chanting "Never Again, never Again," referring to the annihilation of 21 million people -6 million Jewish - in World War II. "Jews go home, Jews go home, Nazi supporters yelled. "Frank's (Collins) father's a Jew, You're one of us," the anti-forces screamed back. The crowd pressed forward, jostling each other, and the - tension could be felt in the heat of sweaty bodies pressing against one another. COLLIN'S VOICE became audible in a momentary silence. "Jews will lead to the downfall of this country," he proclaimed. The crowd burst into ap- plause as he ended his address. The antagonism the factions felt toward each other was erupting more and more frequently into small battles. Plainclothes police dispersed through the crowd rapidly surrounded and broke up these incidents before they ignited the tense antagonists. But as one incident would be squelched on the right another altercation would erupt on the left. Gradually the crowd dispersed until once again the park took on a peaceful air of summer cool. Scattered clumps of hangers-on stood by quietly talking. Many of the extra police squads boar- ded chartered city busses to leave while others stood by, waiting for the remnants of the rally to wander off. A young couple stood by surveying the scene. They both grew up and con- tinue to live in the Marquette Park area. Both expressed opposition to the Nazis and explained the actions of the crowd. "These guys are just saying, 'We want the Park to stay white," 27- year-old Xavier Marrique said. "If the Nazis would leave the people would still be here. The Nazis are just an added attraction.
