Nearly 500 Chicago police officers assembled early Sunday in the park to keep order, but up to one hour before the rally was scheduled to begin, they had no idea what would happen, where the rally would be held, or even if it would take place at all. The beginnings of a stiff, cooling breeze cut through the muggy Chicago heat as spectators, many from the Marquette Park area, assembled in the early afternoon. Two dozen mounted police officers stood in formation, nerelaxing. A large part of the crowd looked as if it had assembled for a pic- nic and the sounds of transistorized baseball drifted through the park.
