Olga's Kitchen Q 205 S. State St. at Washingtonn Ann Arbor, Mi. Phone: 663-1207 WASHINQTON (UPI) - Rep. Philip Ruppe said yesterday he has been ad- vised that the House Armer Services next week will cut the Navy's funding request for Project Seafarer from $40.5 million to $10 million - with none of the money to be used in Michigan. The Houghton Republican, a long- time Seafarer opponent, said he_ has learned that the committee will direct the Navy to use the money for research and development only at its existing facility in Clam Lake, Wis. I'M EXTREMELY pleased that the House committee has removed Michigan as a site for the project," Ruppe said. "Now it is up to the Senate to uphold the House committee's ac- tion." A spokesperson for Ruppe said the committee's report on Seafarer funding will be made public next week after "some minor adjustments" are made. The Navy was seeking $45.5 million for the coming fiscal year to continue research and development of a so- called scaled-downversion of Project Seafarer in Michigan's Upper Penin- sula and northern Wisconsin. Project Seafarer involves the use of buried cable to communicate with nuclear submarines. ISL.
