Page 16-Friday, June 30, 1978-The Michigan Daily NBA owners swap, Braves move to coast LOS ANGELES (AP) - Buffalo Braves managing partner John Y. Brown and Boston Celtics owner Irving Levin agreed yesterday to swap owner- ship of their basketball teams with the Braves moving to San Diego. "We've pretty much finalized an agreement," said Brown. "We have a tentative letter of intent. As far as I'm concerned, we have a final deal subject to a board of governors' approval." A meeting of the NBA's Board of Governors is scheduled in Chicago on July 7. The Braves' move to San Diego marks the return of an NBA franchise to that city. The Houston Rockets were moved from San Diego in 1971 after four seasons. According to Levin, the swap was a straight trade with no cash involved. Levin said he and his partner, Harold Lipton, worked out the details of the trade from their side. "We've made a very fair agreement with the Sports Arena in San Diego," said Levin, anticipating the move. "That city is growing by leaps and bounds and the enthusiasm is just tremendous. I've talked with individual members of the board of governors who think this is an excellent move, both for us and for Brown and his partner." Brown would make no firm statement as to the status of longtime Celtics General Manager Red Auerbach. "I'm anxious to see what he feels needs to be done to build the Celtics back into a winner," said Brown. "I have the greatest respect for Red, but I haven't had a chance to talk to him about staying. I need to talk to him soon." The straight swap of teams is not un- precedented in professional sports. Carroll Rosenbloom swapped his National r'ootball League Baltimore Colts to Robert Irsay for the Los Angeles Rams in 1972. Irsay purchased the Rams and immediately made the trade.
