The Michigan Daily-Saturday, June 17, 1978-Page 15 Anger, frustration torment golfer Bean DENVER (AP)-Fiery Andy Bean, who blew the final round of the U.S. Open with a 79 in Tulsa last year, passed a temper test Friday that in- cluded a loud stereo, a dizzying roller- coaster ride of birdies and double bogeys, and an inquiry if he was for real. Bean, the hottest player on the golf tour with successive victories at the Kemper and Memphis tour stops, plucked six birdies from Cherry Hills on the second day of the 78th U.4 Open but also was staggered with two double bogeys and three bogeys. He finished with a second straight r-over-par 72. "I was like a damn yo-yo out there ... uh ... pardon me, I was like a yo-yo out there," said Bean, who struggles to keep his volcanic temper under control. "I was three over par at one time and I could have thrown in the towel. But I don't do that anymmore." Bean was steaming because of an in- cident on the 17th fairway of a par 5 that has a green surrounded by water and a road running parallel to the hole. "I had 80 yards to the flag. for my third shot with a sandwedge and this damn car rolls by real slow," said Bean. "Just as I start to hit my shot somebody turns the stereo up. I waited 30 seconds or so but I could still hear the thing a quarter mile down the road." Bean dunked the ball in the water and a double bogey 7 to go from 1-under to 1- over. "I'm learning one thing," saidl Bean. "After I hit a shot it's history. I'm beginning to realize it. That's why I think I'm playing better." A broadcast journalist shoved a microphone in Bean's face and asked "Is this the tournament where we find out if Andy Bean is for real?" Bean stared at his questioner and an- swered calmly and slowing, "If I win it, Andy Bean is for real ... if I don't, Andy Bean is for real. .. Andy Bean will be around a long time." Bean still keeps up a running com- mentary with himself between shots. Asked' if he was talking to himself, Bean said, "No, I was scorning myself. When you hit a bad shot, you've got to get your thoughts together." Bean had made 11 birdies in two days yet is 2-over par but said "If I keep making birdies, then the leader board had better watch out." He added, "I don't like to get beat by anybody. When I tee up, I tee it up to win. And now my thinking is better." Bean said "I've calmed down the last couple of years." With that Bean walked to a nearby electric golf cart, sat down, thought a second and said some unpleasant words about the 17th hole.
