The Mishtaan Uotly-uuuv uc x Ford celebrates diamoind jubilee DEARBORN, Mich. (AP)-Ford Motor Co. turned 75 yesterday, and for the occasion dressed some "workers" in turn-of-the-century garb to assemble a 1903 Model A. The Model A, Ford Motor's first car, was followed by the B, the C and the D and finally, in 1908, by the sturdy little car that revolutionized the way_ Americans lived-the Model T . The re-assembled Model A led a parade of three- quarters of a century's worth of Ford cars through historic Greenfield Village. Other parades were held in New York City, Boston, Chicago and St. Louis to commemorate the company's anniversary. THE IMPORTANT of the vintage Model A was not only symbolic. The first sale was to a Chicago dentist whose $85 check shored up the company's bank account, which had dwindled to $223.65. The rest is automotive, and social, history. In 16 years, Henry Ford needed more than $105 million to buy out the company's other stockholders. Ford Motor started June 16, 1903, with 10 em- ployees in a small, converted wagon factory on Mack Avenue in Detroit. It wss one of 80 new auto companies formed that yesr. NOW, HENRY FORD'S grandson, Henry Ford II, presides over one of the world's largest industrisl corporations. Profita in 1977 totaled $1.7 billion from operations in 1115 nations. Ford sold 1,708 Model As, but his influence wasn't really felt until he put together the Model T. From 1908 to 1927, Americans grabbed up every Model T that Ford could turn out. The price eventusily reached a low of $280, and the public took to the moad. During that first yesr, the fledgling company tur- ned out about 10,000 Model Ta, each hand-built. It wasn't until 1913 that Henry Ford envisioned the moving assembly line for production. THE STUBBORN MAN kept building the hasic black Model T until deslers, facing stiff competition from an upstart outfit called General Motors, demanded a new car. In 1928 it came--the second Model A. Ford Motor was guided by Henry and a son, Ed- sel, through the 1930s. By the mid-1940s, the com- pany was in a financial shambles. Henry. Ford II, then 28, was called home from the Navy to take over insa bitter family struggle. His grandfather died on April 7, 1947, at the age of 83. The second Henry quickly turned around the firm's financial picture by firing more than 1,000 executives and hiring aides whome he would credit for the company's financial about-face.
