Page 14-Thursday, June 15, 1978-The Michigan Daily WALTON, LAFLEUR LEADING VOTE-GETTERS NBA, NHL select All-Star teams * *i * By The Associated Press CORONADO, Calif. - Guard David Thompson of the Denver Nuggest was the only repeater on the National Basketball Association's 1977-78 All- Star team, announced Tuesday prior to the league's annual summer meetings. Thompson, who made the squad last year as a forward, was joined on the first team by guard George Gervin of San Antonio, center Bill Walton of Por- tland and forwards Truck Robinson of New Orleans and Julius Erving of Philadelphia. The second team consisted of rookie Walter Davis of Phoenix and Maurice Lucas of Portland at forward, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of Los Angeles at center and Paul Westphal of Phoenix and Pete Maravich of New Orleans at guard. Walton was the leading vote-getter in the balloting among three writers from each league city with 121 points, far out- distancing Abdul-Jabbar, who got 42. Points were tabulated on the basis of two for each first-place vote and one for a second-place mention. Walton was the league's Most Valuable Player this year while Abdul- Jabbar won that honor last season. MONTREAL - Guy Lafleur of the Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens was the leading vote-getter, but the New York Islanders had the most players named yesterday as first- team all-stars in the National Hockey League for the 1977-78 season. The Islanders placed three players, the Canadiens two anil the Boston Bruins one on the first team. The Canadiens had two on the second team along with one each from the Buffalo Sabres and the Islanders and two from the Toronto Maple Leafs. The four selections on the two teams from the Islanders equals their previous total in their first five seasons in the NHL. Defenseman Denis Potvin, center Bryan Trottier and left wing Clarke Gillies were selected to the first team, while rookie right wing Mike Bossy was chosen to the second squad. Completing the first team were goaltender Ken Dryden of Montreal, Boston defenseman Brad Park and Guy Lafleur. Joining Bossy on the second team were defensemen Larry Robinson of Montreal and Borje Salming of Toron- to, Buffalo goaltender Don Edwards, Toronto center Darryl Spittler and left winger Steve Shutt of the Canadiens. i Before it's too late...
