Thompson and his staff billed tax- payers for calls to political consultants in Washington and Detroit, to his Chicago re-election campaign commit- tee and to Republican Party officials across the nation, the two-month AP in- vestiatic, shnwc THOMPSON IS running for re- election this year. He is currently ser- ving a two-year term because the state constitution was amended to make gubernatorial elections fall in non- presidential election years. After this year, the governor's term will again be four years. After the investigation began in April, Thompson's campaign commit- tee tried to reimburse the state for political calls. The committee paid $485, though the AP'found that, at the least, an estimated $947 in such calls had been placed. A few Thompson aides also reimbur- sed the state for personal calls. The AP investigation involved checks on about one per cent of 190,000 long- distance calls made from the day Thompson took office Jan. 10, 1977 to the end of 1977. Overall, the Thompson phone bill totaled about $120,000. Among the findings: -Taxpayers were charged for at least 107 calls from Thompson and his staff to Douglas Bailey, a Washington- based consultant paid $9,000 a month by the campaign committee. The bill: $282 for nearly 14 hours of conversation. '-An additional $80 was billed to the state for 48 calls made to the Republican National Committee in canuiates or co raise nepu ocan cam- paign money. -Dozens of calls to Citizens for Thompson offices in Chicago cost an estimated $285, only $57 of which the committee has repaid. -Dan Patterson, a former Thompson aide and a close friend who left the ad- ministration in August without paying any of the bills, made 33 calls to his family in Dayton, Qhio, to a girlfriend in Milwaukee and to various people in -An office staff member, Martie Springfield, made at least 27 personal calls to a boyfriend, family members in New Jersey and friends in California, costing taxpayers $88. "I was an abuser," she acknowledged, saying she plans to reimburse the state and adding that the governor's chief fiscal officer, Dan Long, "made me feel good.
