Lamp lights up Cubs
CHICAGO (AP)-Dennis Lamp pitched a one-hitter and Dave Kingman
blasted a two-run homer in the first inning yesterday to lead the Chicago
Cubs to a 5-0 victory.
Lamp; gaining only his second victory against five losses, helped his own
cause with a pair of run-scoring singles as the first-place Cubs captured their
seventh victory in their last eight starts.
Lamp, a 25-year-old right-hander, had a no-hitter going until Gene
Richards singled with two out in the sixth inning. The only other baserunner
for the San Diego Padres was Gene Tenace, who walked in both the second
and seventh innings.,
Kingman, the National League's home run leader, walloped his 13th of
the season after Gene Clines had doubled off loser Bob Owchinko, 3-6.
Lamp singled home a run in the second inning and Clines followed with a
run-scoring double to give the Cubs a 4-0 lead.
Chicago picked up another run in the sixth when Kingman beat out a
bunt single and came around to score on an infield single by Lamp.
Lamp retired the first four Padres on ground balls before Gene Tenace
walked with one out in the second. Tucker Ashford hit into a force play but
reached second when Manny Trillo's-relay wentinto the-dugout for an error,
but Lamp got Dave Roberts to fly out to end the inning.

Make room for Simons
MEMPHIS-Jim Simons, a recent winner of the Memorial tourna-
ment, putted his way to a 4-under-par 68 and a one-stroke lead yesterday in
the second round of the $250,000 Danny Thomas Memphis Golf Classic.
"Basically, I didn't make many mistakes," the baby-faced Simons said,
"and I putted the ball very well."
He did, indeed. he scored four times from the 12 to 15 foot range and
dropped two others from about 25 feet.
The strong.effort in hot, sunny weather gave him a 36-hole total of 136, 8
shots under par on th4 7,249 yard Colonial Country Club course which was
still wet from a series of thunderstorms.
Americans win in Paris
PARIS-Americans Hank Pfister and dene Mayer won the French
Open men's doubles title yesterday with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory over the
Spanish team of Jose Higueras and Manuel Orantes.
Pfister, 24, and Mayer, 22, played crisp, aggressive tennis to gain the
$18,000 title and to uphold a bit of Ameican honor here at Roland Garros
Stadium.
Dick Stockton of the United States faces defending champion Guillermo
Vilas in the men's semifinals today, but no other Americans are left in the
final rounds of clay court play.
