The Michigan Daily-Thursday, May 4, 1978--Page 19 sports of the DAILY Women improve The Michigan State Invitational, held this past weekend in East Lansing was something of a breakthrough for Michigan's women's track team. Not only did the team fare well (unofficially third of eight teams, according to coach Red Simmons) but seven varsity records were set as well. "I couldn't believe the team improved so much," said Simmons of the striders' accomplishments. The 1500 meter relay squad of Sherrie King, Christina Smith, Katherine Benner and Darlynda Key placed first with a time of 4:01. Key also set a new school record with her 177'71" long jump. The 400 meter relay squad of Roberta Brown, Karen Preston, King and Pam Moore finished with a time of :49.8, giving them second place and a new record. Other records were set by Moore in the 200 meter with a time of :24.5, Benner in the 800 meter with a time of 2:20 and Key in the 400 meter with a time of :59.8. Moore and Benner both earned second place with their times and Key pulled a third place. Abby Currier's discus throw of 119'7" put her in third place with a new record and Julie Clifford's time of 4:55 in the 1500 meters also set a new school standard. Simmons attributed his team's all-around good showing to the improved conditions. "The weather has improved, we've reached a point where we can train harder, more intensely," he said. -ELISA FRYE Pristine pitching Junior right-hander Tom Owens continued the recent tradition of Michigan pitching excellence with a 6-0 no-hitter over Notre Dame, com- pleting a doubleheader sweep of the Irish. Owens recorded six strikeous while walking only one in raising his record to 3-2 and Michigan's to 18-11. The only threat to the no-hitter was in the seventh when an Irish hitter with two out bunted. Owens threw wildly to first pulling Bob Wasilewski off the bag. Owens received an error on the play. Freshman Mark Clinton made his first start for the Wolverines in the first game, and received relief help from first-year man Mike Thomas in whitewashing Notre Dame in the opening game 4-0. The two limited the weak-hitting Irish to only four hits while the Wolverines decided the contest with a three-run outburst in the fifth. -DAILY SPORTS fruitless effort r In spite of Mitch Kupchak's attempts to keep the ball out of the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers, he and his teammates on the Washington Bullets were downed by the Sixers, 110-104. 4 I THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN SPEED READING AND STUDY SKILLS Improve your grades by learning how to use your textbook, lecture notes and time ef- fectively.
