Park gets first statue
This gate-shaped sculpture was recently erected in Ann Arbor's new statue
park on Detroit St. betwen Catherine and Fourth Ave. The idea behind the park
was to attract public art into the downtown area, according to the park's planners.
Ruling on press searches
finds opposition in Congress

WASHINGTON (UPI) - Rep. Robert
Drinan, (D-Mass.), introduced a bill
yesterday that would override a
Supreme Court decision on Wednesday
on searches and seizures in such places
as newspaper offices.
The court ruled police were under no
constitutional obligation to use a sub-
poena rather than a warrant to obtain
information from a newspaper's of-

fices. A warrant could be issued, the
court declared, even ifa newspaper had
committed no crime, but was merely
suspected of having information of one.
Drinan's bill would change the nature
of warrants, by making them issuable
only in cases when there was probable
cause that the party being searched had
committed or was committing a crime.
"It is incumbent on Congress to
recognize what the Supreme Court has
unfortunately overlooked: the vital role
of a free press in a free society,"
Drinan said in House floor remarks.
Drinan said he was sending a letter to
all House members asking for cospon-
sors of the bill.
