Taylor, 35, said he was hanging up his No. 42 jersey after talking with friends, including former teammate and new Redskins coach Jack Pardee, "who felt like some of the drive was gone" from his performance. Taylor was an Arizona State alumnus, whose speed and circus catches made him Sonny Jurgensen's favorite target during the Redskins' explosive aerial shows of the late 1960s, will now join the team's personnel department with an eye toward moving into coaching. World Cup opener a tie BUENOS AIRES, Argentina-Poland held West Germany, the defending champion, to a 0-0 tie in the opening game of the World Soccer Cup Thur- sday. A crowd of 77,000 in Buenos Aires' River Plate Stadium saw the Poles nearly score a major upset. Only fine goaltending by Sepp Maier, a veteran of Germany's winning team of 1974, kept Poland from scoring in a series of offensive attacks in the first half. The Germans did not resemble the great team, led by Franz Becken- bauer, which won the World Cup in Germany four years ago. It was the fourth time in a row that the opening game of the World Cup had ended in a scoreless tie. Heinsohn to coach Braves? BUFFALO, N.Y.-Tom Heinsohn, the colorful coach who was fired by the Boston Celtics early last winter after the Celtics took a nose dive, denies that he has made a deal to coach the Buffalo Braves next basketball season. But Heinshohn acknowledged that he has been talking with John Y. Brown, half owner of the Braves who expect to move to another city, probably Dallas, before the 1978-79 National Basketball Association season gets under way. The Braves' coaching job opened up after the 1977-78 season when Cotton Fitzsimmons left to become the new coach of the Kansas City Kings. Heinsohn told the Associated Press in Boston on Thursday, "I've talked to Brown twice. I talked to him again today, and we're going to set up a meeting tomorrow. But right now I have no plans to coach anywhere." Arnie in second CHARLOTTE, N.C.-Kermit Zarley, winless since 1972 and a top 10 finisher only once this year, knocked in three straight birdies and added a fourth on the final hole Thursday to take the first-round lead over Arnold Palmer in the $300,000 Kemper Open golf tournament. Zarley dropped a 6-foot putt on the final hole for a 6-under-par 66 on the 7,160-yard Quail Hollow Country Club course. Arnold Palmer, seeking his first triumph since 1973, held the early lead but dropped one shot behind Zarlev with a 5-under-par 67. Coach'changes galore Dave Garcia was firedyesterday as manager of the California Angels and replaced by Jim Fregosi, now a player with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Fregosi will join the Angels Friday. In hockey, former Philadelphia coach Fred Shero was named as new general manager and coach of the New York Rangers, replacing GM John Ferguson and coach Jean Guy Talbot. -Daily Sports For more sports, turn to page 15 during the Southwest Conference tour- nament. But as any zoo-goer knows, you're not supposed to feed the Bears, and the Michigan mound corps will be doing its best to starve the Baylor bats that have been feasting on the servings of op- posing pitchers. LAST WEEKEND, Steve Howe, Steve Perry and Tom Owens combined to allow just one earned run in 26% in- nings. Howe, who seta Michigan record for career wins with ten, will be on the mound tonight against the Bears. Perennial powers Southern Cal (49-9) and Arizona State (53-10) are considered the favorites again this year. The Trojans are making their 17th World Series ap- pearance, having last won the title in 1974. The Hurricanes of Miami are blessed with outstanding pitching. Randy Guerra, 10-0 and 1.86 ERA, also leads the team in homers with 11. Other Hurricanes who can pitch up a storm include Tony Villa (11-1, 2.18) and Augie Ruiz (12-3, 1.35). The losers of the M-Baylor and USC- Miami games will meet on Saturday and the winners will meet on Sunday. The other first round match-ups are scheduled for tomorrow - North Carolina (36-15) against Oral Roberts (44-10) and St. Johns (40-16) against Arizona State. ORAL ROBERTS ig considered the tournament darkhorse, as the Oklahoma squad boasts a team average of .310 and the team has ripped off 18 wins in a row.
