AIA signs M's Baxter By DAVE RENBARGER Former Michigan basketball stand- out Dave Baxter yesterday signed to play with the Athletes in Action. The announcement was made at a press conference in California, home base for the amateur club. The AIA squad is a branch of Campus Crusade for Christ and plays exhibition games with teams from all over thg country. Last December, the A A knocked the Wolverines in Anaheim, Cal. In making the decision, Baxter has apparently forsaken any attempt in pro basketball, at least for the time being. Baxter was -unavailable for comment following the announcement, and fur- ther details of the agreement are unknown. The 6-3 guard is scheduled to return home late today. Six weeks ago, Baxter, who this past season established a new school record for assists, indicated that he was in- terested in the AIA, but would rather wait until after the NBA draft to see what might happen and possibly get a tryout. Since that time, however, he has paid several visits to California, and ap- parently changed his mind. The Michigan coaches, when reached last night, expressed their pleasure with the development. "He's been out there quite a bit lately," said Johnny Orr. "He's all gung ho for it." "It'll be a good experience for him," added'assistant Bill Frieder. "And it still leaves the avenues to the pros open." Besides Baxter, the AA landed three oter players, including Arkansas' Marvin Delph and Purdue's Eugene Parker.
