Page 16-Saturday, May 27, 1978-The Michigan Daily HOWE HUR LS FOUR-HIT TER Michigan blasts Aggies 8-1 By JAMIE TURNER Eight days ago, Steve Howe was get- ting out of bed for the first time in nearly a week because of a bladder in- fection. After yesterday's performan- ce, the Texas A&M Aggies must have been wondering what the- Wolverine sophomore could do if he had been healthy all that time. For the lefty from Clarkston limited the Aggies to only four hits in leading the way for Michigan's 8-1 clobbering of the sloppy College Station team. It wasn't that the Wolverines didn't earn the victory, for they most cer- tainly did. With timely hitting and a practically airtight defense, Michigan spotted A&M a first inning run, and then ran away and hid with a five-run fourth that sealed the victory. But a big part of the'game was the many physical and mental miscues committed by the Aggies, a performan- ce that while not dooming the team from Down South, surely added to their demise. Michigan tied the game 1-1 in the second inning when Jim Berra''s possible double play grounder was dropped by A&M second baseman Ran- dy Woodruff with the bases loaded. In the fourth, first baseman Kyle Hawthorne's muff loaded the bases for Scott Anderson's two-run single that broke the game open. Moments later, Vic Ray came home from third when catcher Buster Turner threw over third baseman Bob Verde's head, with Anderson moving to third. Two pitches later, a wild toss by starter and loser Mark Ross scored Anderson. "You're always surprised when the other team kicks the ball around," said Michigan coach Moby Benedict, "The surprising thing was that they were making errors on easy, or what should have been easy, plays." More errors by the Aggies set up the final two runs for Michigan in the fifth. After Mike Parker was hit by a pitch, George Fousiannes was safe on a booted grounder by All-American can- didate Bob Bonner at shortstop. Jim Capoferi drove in Parker with a single to center and Fousiannes scored on Bob Wasilewski's long sacrifice fly. commented Benedict. "Howe's the type of guy that can put the game away for you when you go into the ninth." The victory for Michigan puts it into the winner's bracket of the double- elimination tournament. The Wolverines will square off against Eastern Michigan in a 4 p.m. game this afternoon. Missouri and Texas A&M will play each other in the losers game at 1 p.m. The winner of that game will play the loser of the Michigan-Eastern game for the right to be in the tournament finals Sunday. Graig McGinnis will start for the Wolverines this afternoon, aiming for his seventh win against the Hurons' Ray Yanus (3-6). Michigan holds a 3-1 season series edge, sweeping Eastern in a doubleheader two weeks ago. "When you're close to T-213 A-273 the well, he (Howe) smells the water," Hurons win opener By JAMIE TURNER Eastern Michigan came into the NCAA District Baseball Tournament as a distinct underdog. Not only had the Hurons not been highly regarded at the beginning of the season, EMU faced yesterday the hottest hitting team in the tournament in the Missouri Tigers. But the doubters turned into believers after the Hurons downed the Tigers 4-2 on the strong left-handed pitching of John Martin. MART ALLOWED bookend runsin the first and ninth innings to the Big Eidht conference division champions as he spaced nine hits while striking out eight. Martin's powerful performance was a boost for Huron coach Ron Oestrike, whose team was facing nearly a two week layoff entering the tournament. "He's been off for two weeks and I didn 't Mow if he could throw.strikes,",, said a pleased Oestrike. "I was a bit worried (in the first inning) but he got tougher as the game went along." After Curt Brown drove in second baseman Jim English with a two out single to left for a 1-0 first inning lead, Tiger starter and loser Bob Pietroburgo was coasting along with a no-hitter into the fourth. BUT IN THE course of five pitches, Pietroburgo lost his no-hitter, his shutout, and then the game. Huron Byron Horn led off the fourth with an infield single, then came home when right fielder Audie Cole leaned in- to a fast ball and drove it over the left field wall. _x Third sacker Brian Detroff reached second on thp next pitch when Tiger - third baseman first dropped Detroit's grounderathen threw wildly to first.
