Tigers bust Bosox, 75

DETROIT-Whoa. It sisn't World
Series time yet. But last night's 7-5
Tiger win over Boston did give the
Detroiters sole control of first place.
Bob Sykes gave up a two run homer in
the first, then hung tough for seven
more innings before giving up another
two run shot in the ninth.
John Hiller came in, gave up another
homer and a walk before retiring three
in a row.

Hiller struck Boston second baseman
Jerry Remy, did the same to Jim Rice
with three awesome changeups and
then got Carl Yastrzemski to ground
out to second as the 48,817 partisans
gave a lusty cheer.
The Tigers had tallies three times in
the eighth on a walk, a single by Milt
May and an RBI single by Tim Cor-
coran, which proved to be the game
winner. Aurelio Rodriguez followed
with a fielder's choice and then Alan
Trammell rammed a triple into the
rightfield corner.
Sykes was able to run his record to 3-0
because the Tigers supported him with
four doubleplays. Boston had a
baserunner in every inning and tallied

13hits.
Meanwhile, the Tigers had ten hits
and drew six walks, all off starter and
loser Mike Torrez (5-2).
In the third, the Tigers got a few

Ron LeFlore got the first hit off
Torrez, a one out single and promptly
stole second. Second baseman Lou
Whitaker then singled and went to
second when Fred Lynn bobbled the
ball, scoring Leflore.
Rusty Staub then socked Torrez's fir-
st pitch deep into rightfield for his four-
th homer and RBI's 29 and 30.
Jason Thompson, who saw his 15
game hitting streak terminated, then
walked. Steve Kemp laid a beautiful
bunt down towards third.
Butch Hobson, playing third with

bone chips in his throwing elbow,
charged it and whipped his throw into
rightfield. Thompson toured the bases
and threw a wild pitch to the plate from
rightfielder Dwight Evans. Kemp
wound up on third and the Tigers led 4-
2.
Sykes ran his shutout string to 18 one-
third innings before Rice hammered a
line drive into the seats in right. Rice is
the league leader in homers and RBI's
(12-30).
The Red Sox now trail the Tigers by a
full game with the Yankees two games
back.
The Tigers entered the ninth ahead
7-2. Sykes walked Hobson and Evans
then hit a home run. On came Hiller
whose second pitch to Bob Bailey was
next seen in the leftfield bleachers.
Today's game starts at 2:15 p.m.,
Sunday's doubleheader begins at 1:30.

Diamondmen vie for bid
For either the Michigan or Michigan State baseball nine, this weekend
will mark the beginning of a second season.
For it is today and tomorrow that the Wolverines and Spartans will bat-
tle for a spot in the national collegiate playoffs.
Michigan, 12-2 in the Big Ten and 25-14 overall, has already clinched a
share of the Big Ten title, but should MSU (10-4 and 32-18) take both today's
game at East Lansing and tomorrow's at Ann Arbor, the Spartans will get
the NCAA bid.
Spartan coach Danny Litwhiler sees this weekend's matchup as just
about even, both sides having some aces in their hand to play.
"I think that we're the better hitters, both for average and power," said
Litwhiler;
"But I give the edge to Michigan on defense, and that's crucial in a short
series." Litwhiler also felt that the Wolverines had the better pitching staff
overall.
Michigan will lead with sophomore southpaw Steve Howe today away,
while the Spartans will go with Brian Wolcott, also a sophomore.
Howe is undefeated at 10-0 over the last two years in Big Ten play, and is
at 5-0 this year. Wolcott is 9-2 overall this year and 3-1 in the conference.
Wolverine coach Moby Benedict will go with lefty Craig McGinnis here
tomorrow, while Litwhiler might choose either Mark Ponorski (5-3 and 2.94)
or Chuck Baker (5-3 and 3.57).
. Michigan is led at the plate by Rick Leach, who's conjured up images of
former Michigan great and pro standout Bill Freehan by hitting a smoking
.425, while the Spartans rely on a pair of boomers, Tony Spada and Kirk Gib-
son, for their fireworks.
Gibson has 13 homers, while Spada has knocked eight balls out and leads
the league in batting with .457.
The big blue guns are designated hitter George Foussianes with six cir-
cuit clouts and junior backstop Jim Capoferi, who has four. Both games will

Henderson a Red
NEW YORK - The New York Mets sent outfielder Ken Henderson to the
Cincinnati Reds yesterday in exchange for relief pitcher Dale Murray.
Henderson, 31, came to the Mets during spring training from the Texas
Rangers, completing a four-team, 11-player trade made during baseball's
winter meetings. He played in just seven games for the Mets, batting .227,
and has been on the disabled list since April 26 after spraining a toe on his
left foot while crashing into the fence on an attempted catch.
Murray, 28, was 1-1 with a 4.09 earned-run average and two saves in 15
games with the Reds this season. Last year, after being acquired from Mon-
treal in the deal that sent Tony Perez to the Expos, Murray was 7-2 with a
4.94 ERA and four saves. -AP
Preakness today
BALTIMORE - It will be Affirmed vs. Alydar and Barrera vs. Barrera
today in the 103rd Preakness at Pimlico race track.
The Affirmed-Alydar match-up figures to be the key to the 1'/i'-mile race.
These two colts have met seven times - Affirmed holds a 5-2 margin in-
cluding a Kentucky Derby victory - and are considered the class of the
seven-horse field.
The Barrera rivalry is thought to be more of a nice human interest touch
than an actual rivalry because father Laz trains favored Affirmed while son
Albert trains outsider Track Reward.
Lots of people will be betting on Affirmed and his glamour-boy jockey
Steve Cauthen. The handsome chestnut colt, who races for Louis Wolfson's
Harbor View Farm, was the early open-money favorite to become a
millionaire and go into the June 10 Belmont Stakes with a chance to win the
