Hoffa, was sentenced in federal court Thursday to two concurrent one-year prison terms for lying on a bank loan application. Rex Ruff, president of the Georgia Council of Juvenile Court Judges, doesn't think he is doing anything in- novative with his sentencing in shoplif- ting cases. He believes he is simply doing something that makes sense. And statistics suggest Judge Ruff's approach is working. In 1976, 212 cases of shoplifting came before his court, but as of Sept. 1, 1977, he had dealt with only87. WHERE DO I MAIL MY RESUMES? Internationa' 82 pg. CORP. She said she would recom- mend to the Attorney General's office that O'Brien be permitted to serve the terms in Florida, where his family lives. O'Brien said he would appeal the conviction. His sentence in the bank loan case will also be served concurrently with a four-month prison term he was handed earlier for violating federal labor laws by accepting a $3,000 car from a Detroit auto dealership the Teamsters union was trying to organize. The earlier conviction is currently being reviewed by the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. O'Brien, a former union organizer who now lives in Florida, emerged as a key figure during the government's investigation of the 1975 Hoffa disap- pearance. Friedman: Recession inevitable DETROIT (UPI) - Economist Milton Friedman says the U.S.' economy will fall into a major recession by 1980, following a period of "double digit" inflation next year. "We may still be heading for a recession in 1978, depending on how the government reacts, to inflation," Friedman said Thursday in a speech to members of the Economic Club of Detroit. "But if we don't have one this year, then we'll have a worse one next year or the next." Friedman predicted inflation, fueled by massive government spending and unsound federal monetary - policies, "probably will be eight or nine per cent by the end of the year, and may be into double digits in 1979." ATTEMPTS by the Federal Reserve Board to slow down the rising inflation rate by tightening money supplies will bring on the recession, he said. "We are in an inflationary period, and the only way to get off that inflation is to slow the economy," he said. "It's a tragedy, but there are no other good op- tions." Friedman, a University of Chicago economics professor and winner of the 1976 Nobel Prize in Economic Science, was in Detroit to promote a proposed constitutional amendment to limit taxes and government spending. Michigan voters rejected a similar proposal in 1976. He said various forms of the proposal are under consideration in several other states. "I believe the country is coming to a turning point," Friedman said. "The role of government is approaching a level that will destroy our economic freedom. At the moment, the best chance we have is to enact a tax limitation amendment to control government spending." Friedman said President Carter's proposed $19 billion tax cut, "is no tax r ru'umatn SUMMER TENNIS U of M Tennis Club At The 11 Varsity Courts at Ferry Field Membership Applications Now Being Received The general rules of operation of the Summer Tennis Program are as follows: 1.
