The Michigan Daily-Friday, May 19, 1978-Page 17 Israelis propose more cities TEL AVIV, Israel (AP)-Six new cities plus satellite towns capable of housinga total of 56,000 Jewish families would go up in the occupied West Bank under a settlement plan presented to an Israeli Cabinet committee, Israeli radio reported yesterday. The radio said the plan, like others drawn up for Jewish settlement on the West Bank of the Jordan River, is far from implentation because of diplomatic difficulties. The United States strongly opposes Jewish settlement in the West Bank, where between 500,000 and 1 milion Palestinian Arabs have lived under Israeli military government since Israel occupied the area in the 1967 Middle East war. President Carter has said the set- tlements are illegal and an obstacle to peace. The newest program set before the committee on settlements reportedly was drawn up by Maj. Gen. Avraham Tamir, chief of army planning, based on the strategic concepts of Ezer Weizman, the Israeli defense minister. No timetable was set. AP Photo If the report is correct, it would be the first time Weizman-seen as a moderate on the settlement issue-has submitted his views on the question to the government of Prime Minister- dent Carter's Menachem Begin. Most of the earlier plans were drawn up hy Weizmans hawkish rival, Agriculture Minister Ariel Sharon, who has proposed that millions of Jews be settled in the West Bank in the next 25 years.
