Sisters repulse burglar, receive citation

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Three
Philadelphia nuns have been honored
as heroines for choking, tackling and
sitting on a would-be church bandit.
"The detectives said we shook the
oomph out of him," said Sister Anita
Cecilia, who with Sisters Marie Sullivan
and Dorothy Payne helped collar the
culprit.
Last Oct. 3 a man identifiedy gpolice
as Juan West, 18, and described as
slender but powerful, emerged from a
second-floor porch at St. Columba's
Church, laden with books and religious
garments.
Sister Dorothy, who is 5 feet 2 inches
tall, confronted the man, grabbed the
hood of his jacket and threw him to the
floor.
"I really was upset about choking
him," Sister Dorothy said at Wed-
nesday's police department award
ceremonies, "But ... you do what you
have to do."
However, West broke free of Sister
Dorothy and bolted for a stairwell,
where he encountered Maurice Myles,
14, one of the nuns' students. Myles
made a flying leap onto the man's back
from a stairway and knocked him flat.
That's when Sisters Marie and Anita
arrived. They decided the best thing to
do was to sit on West. Myles and two
classmates did the same, and they too,
were cited for heroism.
"We twisted his arm behind him," Sis
ter Marie said with a grin.
Sister Anita then summoned the
police, who arrested West. He later was
convicted of burglary, police said.
