Page 16--Wednesday, May 17, 1978-The Michigan Daily DEADLOCKED IN 14th Tigers stuck in marathon By PAUL CAMPBELL Special tothe Daily DETROIT-Phase One is over. It ended last night as Seattle and Detroit battled into the early innings. Just as Ralph Houk hoped, his young team got off to a good start, playing aginst weaker Western Division clubs. The good start was supposed to give the young players confidence as they, headed into Phase Two. Well, they'll need all the confidence they can muster, because Phase Two begins tonight when the Tigers travel to Milwaukee. It will be the first of 17 straight games against Eastern Divison teams. That includes two four- game series against the Boston Red Sox, who trail the Tigers by mere per- centage points. But last night's Phase One finale again showed the resiliency that Detroit has displayed-all year in run- ning up its best start ina decade. The Tigers waited until the last moment to tie the game. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Jason Thom- pson extended his hitting streak to 13 games by belting a long double to left center. He took third on a wild pitch by reliever Enrique Romo and came home when Steve Kemp crashed a sacrifice fly to deep center. Rupert Jones made a magnificent catch on the ball, nabbing it on the dead run with his back at home plate. In fact, if it weren't for Jones' heroics in the field, the game probably would have ended earlier. He robbed Kemp again on an almost identical play in the eleventh with Thompson on first. He also victimized Rusty Staub in the sixth with a diving catch in the gap. In the third he held Mark Wagner to a single by ranging far to his left to cut off the Tiger shortstop's slicing liner. But, in a night filled with brilliant defense, Steve Kemp made the most stunning play in the top of the tenth. With Julio Cruz on first, Craig Reynolds lined a sinking drive to left. Kemp got a good jump, caught the ball at his knees and doubled up Cruz with an incredible throw to first that would do any shor- tstop proud. Tiger starter Milt Wilcox pitched superbly through four innings, holding the Mariners to a lone walk. But he weakened in the fifth, giving up con- secutive singles to Juan Bernhardt, Bob Stinson and Cruz which tied the game 1- 1. The Mariners scored the go-ahead run in the sixth without benefit of a hit. Bruce Bochte walked, and completed the circuit of the bases courtesy of two sacrifices sandwiched around a wild pitch.
