diamond
in the
roughage
PONTIAC (UPI) - A $17,000
diamond ring found in the stomach of
convicted perjurer Peter Lazaros
following his death in jail last week was
stolen last year from a New York City
jeweler, authorities said Tuesday.
The ring, which included two
emerald-cut diamonds, was reported
missing Jan. 19,1977 by 1ulgari Danaos
Ltd., said Oakland County Prosecutor
L. Brooks Patterson.
IT WAS part of a display shown to
Lazaros, a self-styled Mafia payoff man
who had a penchant for high-style
living, by employees of the store in his
room at Manhattan's plush Pierre
Hotel earlier that same day, Patterson
said.
"He rejected them all," Patterson
said. "After the employees returned to
the store and made a check of their
display, they realized one of the
diamonds was missing."
Patterson said the employees con-
fronted Lazaros with their discovery,
but he threatened to file a lawsuit if
they pursued the matter further. The
store then filed an insurance claim and
collected the resale value of the ring.
Lazaros, 44, who had a long history of
heart trouble, died last Wednesday in
the infirmary at the Oakland County
Jail where he was awaiting trial on an
assortment of fraud charges.
