FORTH WORTH, Texas (AP)-Jerry
Heard, who once wondered if he'd ever
"10play golf again, rebounded from a long
injury-absence with a 6-under-par 66
and tied front-running Steve Melnyk for
the second-round lead yesterday in the
$200,000 Colonial National Invitational
1iGolf Tournament.
Melnyk, who had only 22 putts in a
leading 65 in the first round, had a much
more solid-and considerably less
0olf tleatt spectacular-69 to match Heard's 36-
hole total of 133.
That's seven shots under par on the
tough, enormously-demanding old
Colonial Country Club course and a
single stroke in front of dangerous Lee

Trevino, a, runnerup in two of his last,
four starts and a former Colonial
champion.
"I DIDN'T really have the ball very
close to the hole," Trevino said after a
no-bogey 68-gave him a 134 total for two

rounds on the layout that stretches 7,151
yards along the banks of the Trinity
River.
"That's because I have such great
respect for this course. It can grab you

if you go for the pins. It's like two great
fighters in the middle of the ring. You
can't go out in the first round slugging
away. You've got to jab a little for a
while."
Tied at 135, only two shots out of the
lead, were hard-hitting Fuzzy Zoeller,
young Mike Sullivan and slender Danny
Edwards: Edwards shot a 68, Zoeller
and Sullivan 69 in the hot, humid
weather that produced temperatures in
the 90s.
HEARD, NOW 31, once was con-
sidered one of the game's most
promising young players. Between 1971
and 1974 he won four titles-including
the 1972 Colonial-and almost one-half
million dollars.
