Tigers dampened
Last night's scheduled game between the Detroit Tigers and the
California Angels was postponed due to rain at Tiger Stadium. The contest
will be made up as a part of a July 23 doubleheader.,
The front-running Bengals continue their current homestand tonight,
opening up a three-game weekend series with the Oakland A's. The
Detroiters need a win to remain the only major league club not to suffer two
straight defeats.

Debol scores big
PRAGUE, Czechoslovakia-Former Michigan star Dave Debol's goal
midway through the third period gave the United States a 4-3 victory over
Finland yesterday, thus assuring the American team of remaining in Group
A competition next year in the World Ice Hockey championships.
Debol's tally, at 8:22 of the third period, gave the Americans six points in
the eight-team competition.
"I am so happy," said U.S.A. coach John Mariucci. "I was concerned
about being relegated to Group B."
Mike Fidler, who set up Debol's game-winner, also scored a goal for the .
Americans, the youngest team in the event with an average age of 22.4.
Pete Lopresti stopped 32 shots in the American goal.

Walton rumored ill
PORTLAND, Ore.-Bill Walton, injury-ridden star center of the Port-
land Trail Blazers may have a rare bone disease, The Oregonian says in a
copyrighted article in today's editions.
The article said the diagnosis of osteopetrosis is "unconfirmed" and "is
a rumor at present."
John White, spokesman for the National Basketball Association team,
denied flatly that there is any truth to the rumor.
White quoted Dr. Robert D. Cook, the Trail Blazer team physician, as
describing the report as "nonsense, pure conjecture and sensationalism."
Dr. Cook and Walton were unreachable.
Walton has been plagued with injuries throughout his professional
basketball career. He missed much of his first two seasons with the Trail
Blazers, then led them to the NBA championship in 1977.
