The righthander had few other troubles however, as he came on in relief in the second game of yesterday's doubleheader at Fisher Stadium to preserve a 5-4 Michigan lead. The Wolverines took the first game as well, 3-2, upping their overall record to 24-11. sports of the DAILY Courting confidence It's really a great feeling when you can prepare for a competitive athletic event, feeling totally confident that you are definitely going to win. This is the situation the Michigan women's tennis team is in as it enters this weekend's SMAIAW tourney that begins today at 9:00 a.m. at the Ferry Field tennis courts. "We should win this event hands down this weekend," boasted Michigan coach Bill Flood. "We've beaten all the teams in the SMAIAW so far this year (MSU, CMU, EMU, WMU) except Wayne State, who we haven't played, and Wayne State is ..." Flood said as he couldn't restrain himself fron laughter. The women enter this event fresh off a successful road trip to Penn State, where they beat the Nittany Lions 6-3 and destroyed Big Ten cham- pion Ohio State, 8-1, losing only to favored Princeton, 7-2. The singles lineup for this four-day event will be the same as before but the doubles players will have a new participant, as Whit Stodghill will test her leg that has been recovering from a stress fracture suffered early this season. "We're trying Whit at doubles because she won't have to run as much as she would in singles," Flood pointed out. "Whit needs a partner that can en- courage her to build up her confidence." Stodghill's partner will be freshper- son Leticia Diaz-Perez. With Stodghill's return to the lineup and the presence of a tournament- tough squad, the women's tennis team can prepare itself very well for the state qualifier next week with a resounding victory this weekend. --BOB WARREN. Rocky rolling PONTIAC, Mich. - The Detroit Lions traded veteran offensive tackle Rocky Freitas to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for an undisclosed future draft choice, the Lions announced yesterday. "It was not an easy decision for me to reach since Rocks has been a solid performer and a class person for the Lions," said Monte Clark, head coach of the NFL club. Clark said the Lions decided to trade Freitas and rely on a "handful of very promising offensive linemen." Freitas, 32, started 116 games in a row for the Lions at right tackle before undergoing knee surgery after an injury in the third game last season. -AP By GEOFF LARCOM The Wolverine baseball machine con- tinued in high gear yesterday, with a gutsy 3-2, 5-4 twinbill sweep of Eastern Michigan at sun-splashed Fisher Stadium. Confident and relaxed following last weekend's doubleheader sweeps over Indiana and Ohio State, the Blue nine played the role of opportunists to the hilt, getting the key hits and fielding plays when it most needed them in tur- ning back the Hurons, leaders of the Mid American Conference. SENIOR SECOND baseman Scott Anderson held the hot bat for Michigan in the opener as he parked a Mark Eighmey fastball over the leftfield wall with leftfielder Vic Ray on board to stake the Wolverines to a 2-0 third in- ning lead. The Hurons battled back in the fourth to tie the score on a pair of walks to lef- tfielder Whitford Boyd and thirdsacker Brian Petroff, along with singles by right fielder Audi Cole and shortstop Brian Stemberger. That set the stage for Anderson's ex- tra inning heroics, as he opened the eighth inning with a double down the leftfield line. Anderson advanced on a picture-perfect sacrifice bunt by senior Dave Chapman, and then scored the game-winner on Rick Leach's fly to deep center. LOOSE PLAY by the Hurons aided the Wolverine cause in the first game. Center fielder Pat Sheridan's seventh inning grounder was misplayed by Michigan first baseman Bob Wasilewski, whose throw sailed past pitcher Tom Owens covering first base. Sheridan chose to make the turn as if to go to second base, and Owens quickly retrieved the ball and fired it back to Wasilewski. Sheridan strolled back to first base, forgetting he was in fair territory. Wasilewski then alertly tagged out the mystified Sheridan. Junior righthander Tom Owens con- tinued to impress, as he followed last week's no-hit performance against Notre Dame by going the route against Eastern, limiting the Hurons to just six hits while striking out four. The Wolverines brought out the lum- ber for the nightcap, as they pounded out nine hits off four Huron hurlers. "WE STUCK the ball real well in the second game," said shortstop Jim Berra. "Even the outs were usually hit hard right at somebody." Down 1-0 in the third, Michigan roared back on singles by Anderson, Leach and right fielder Mike Parker, along with walks to Berra and left fielder John McEldowney. Michigan added two more in the fifth and held a seemingly secure 5-1 lead going into the sixth inning. THE HURONS erupted with three consecutive singles however, nicking freshman reliever Mike Thomas for three runs. With men on second and third, junior Steve Perry came on in relief and promptly bobbled leftfielder Bill Crews' bouncer, filling the bases. Undaunted, Perry struck out Sheridan, and then mowed the Hurons down in or- der in the top of the seventh to preserve the one-run victory. The win went to freshman walk-on Mark Clinton, who pitched the first four innings before being relieved by Thomas. Clinton, like the rest of the Wolverines, is enjoying a hot streak at present, having battled his way up from the bottom rung of Moby Benedict's pitching rotation.
