As regularly as Haley's Comet, but
with a greater frequency, comes a
cosmic spectacle into the August sky.
This year, look for the Perseid meteor
shower around the 20th of the month.
The best time to see the display is
between 1 and 4 a.m., providing the
skies are clear during the eight-day
shower. Astronomers at the Griffith's
Observatory in Los Angeles said as
many as 60 meteors per hour can be
seen.
A METEOR IS a "particle (rock or
dust) that enters the earth's at-
mosphere, heats up, and makes a
bright streak as it burns," explained
Astronomy professor Richard Sears.
He said a meteor shower is a collection
of such particles. Meteor showers oc-
cur, according to Sears, because the
Earth's "orbit encounters most meteor
streams once per year."
The Perseid meteor shower provokes
more recognition and excitement than
others because, "It's perhaps the

brightest one that regularly appears
year after year," Sears said.
Other spectacular showers include
the Leonid shower which was last ob-
served in 1966, and occurs every 33
years. Most of the other showers simply
are not bright enough to be visible from
the Earth or they don't produce as
many meteors as the Perseid.
MOST METEORS or showers have
interstellar orbits similar to those of

comets which become visible from the
earth after a certain number of years.
Meteor showers can be best observed
in a very dark setting. Astronomers say
sky watchers should maintain constant
eye motion, taking in the entire sky in-
stead of staring at one specific area. If
the star gazer does concentrate on one
area, the stars may appear to move
even though they actually do not.

Congress aims to
proteet pot smokers

WASHINGTON (AP) - People who
smoke marijuana grown in Mexico will
know whether it has been treated with
dangerous herbicides under legislation
on its way to approval by Congress.
A proposal agreed to by House and
Senate conferees on Thursday would
require the United States to withhold
money given to Mexican authorities to
spray marijuana unless the sprays are
clearly detectable to smokers.
THE BAN is designed primarily to
protect Americans from smoking
marijuana that has been treated with
paraquat, which is a health hazard to
heavy marijuana smokers.
The proposal, part of foreign
assistance and arms export control

legislation, was offered by Sen. Charles
Percy, (R-Ill.), who originally wanted
to stop Mexico's U.S.-subsidized
paraquat spraying program. But a
House amendment sponsored by Rep.
Lester Wolff, (D-N.Y.), proposed in-
stead that a warning agent be used in
the sprays.
Percy said the White House, the Drug
Enforcement Agency and the State
Department will accept the proposal,
although they would prefer that no ac-
tion be taken by Congress.
The legislation authorizes $13.5
million in aid to Mexico for drug
eradication programs, including efforts
to eliminate poppy plants from which
heroin is made.
