Squabbles mark end of GEO' hearings By MITCH CANTOR Except for minor quibbling between the two attorneys in the case, the week- long Michigan Employment Relations Commission (MERC) hearings to determine the status of University Graduate Student Assistants (GSAs) ended quietly in the Union yesterday. MERC ordered the hearings two years ago to decide whether GSAs are students receiving assistantships as a form of financial aid, as the University claims, or employees. The latter classification would allow the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) to bargain collectively with the Univer- sity. Most of the testimony from the four teaching assistants (TAs) GEO counsel Mark Cousens called to the stand yesterday included facts previously givenrby other witnesses this week. The four witnesses, Helen Sheimo, Ed Bit- ner, Alex Felvebel, and Esther Mar- tinez, attested to a variety of GEO claims. Sheimo, the first witness, testified that her experience teaching a section of English 125 (English Composition) was irrelevant to her dissertation topic dealing with the editing of a medieval transcript. "I think it (the teaching experience) has been of great personal benefit, butI don't think it's helped me in my par- ticular area at all," Sheimo said. During Sheimo's testimony Univer- sity Counsel Robert Veracruysee and Cousens engaged in the first in a series of day-long squabbles. Veracruysee, hinting that Sheimd's participation in the GEO strike diminished her efforts as a student that semester, was in- terrupted by an objection by Cousens. "I think it (the line of questioning) is nonsense. The argument is just plain stupid," Cousens said. Veracruysee was later stopped in his questioning when Sperka judged the at- torney to be "badgering and harassing" Sheimo. During Cousens' redirect on the same witness, Veracruysee reiterated a claim he has made several times this week. "Mr. Cousens keeps on leading the witnesses. Are we going to have the witness testify or Mr. Cousens testify?" Veracruysee objected vehemently to Cousens' questioning of Bitner when the witness mentioned he was consulted in his capacity asa GEO steward. "If I can't go into anything that has to do with the Union (GEO) then he (Cousens) shouldn't be able to. He can't have it all his way all the time," he ap- pealed to Sperka. However, the judge overruled the objection. See GEO, Page 5 THE MICHIGAN DAILY volume LxxxvHu,.No.64-s Saturday. August 12, 1978 is edited and managed by students at the University of Michigan.
