The Michigan Daily-Saturday, August 5, 1978-Page 15 WIN WITH SINGLES AND STEALS Scrappy Cubs change their style CHICAGO (AP)-The Chicago Cubs, whose home run power in the "friendly confines" of Wrigley Field was once legend, are trying to steal the National League East title with speed, defense and pitching. No longer blessed with sluggers like Ernie Banks, Hank Sauer and Bill Nicholson, whose sweeping swings propelled shots over the short porches, the fans are now cheering the likes of Ivan DeJesus, Manny Trillo, Rodney Scott and Jerry White. A walk or a single almost instantly finds the runner stealing second these days, waiting to be driven in with still another single. Home runs are a rarity. Going into yesterday's game with Montreal, the Cubs had but 45 home runs as against 67 stolen bases, many of which have come from DeJesus and Scott since the All-Star break. Despite the lack of power, the Cubs found themselves only 3 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies after sweeping a midweek series from the St. Louis Cardinals. "You make do with what you've got," said Franks, refusing to admit which players have the green light to steal on their own, "because if they fail, I want to take the blame." DeJesus at short and Trillo at second make one of the best double play com- bos in the league and White, when healthy, is as good a center fielder defensively as the Cubs have had in a long time. It isn't likely the Cubs can seriously makea run at the title with their Punch- and-Judy act. But now that everything else has fallen into place, they are hoping the injured Dave Kingman can come back with a splurge of power which could give the entire team a needed lift on offense. Cubs expose Expos CHICAGO (AP)-Pinch-hitter Bobby Murcer drove in the tying run with a bunt single in the seventh inning and Bill Buckner followed with a run scoring single yesterday to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 6-4 victory over the Montreal Expos. Trillo was out attempting to score from second on Rick Reuschel's single to right field, with Carter getting the throw from Ellis Valentine. The Cubs won, 6-4. Parrish, Warren Cromarite and Chris Speier afterRick Reuschel, 10-9, had retired 15 batters ina row. Greg Gross opened the bottom of the seventh for the Cubs with a pinch-single and Larry Bittner reached on an error by Dave Cash. Ivan DeJesus sacrificed both runners along before Murcer dropped his bunt single to score Gross. Buckner then singled to score Bittner. The Cubs, winning their fourth in a row, added an insurance run in the eighth on two walks and a single.
