GEO begins state requested hearings (Continued from Page3) number of criteria which he felt con- firmed a GSAs status as a student. Ac- cording to Veracruysee, there is stiff competition among universities for top graduate students, and therefore the University must offer financial support such as fellowships, loans and GSA positions to attract the best candidates. "The University has to offer this sup- port to these students in order to get them here," Veracruysee said. "If we don't offer these positions, they'll go someplace else, like Harvard or MIT." Veracruysee also pointed out a num- ber of distinctions between GSAs and regular faculty members: -GSAs must take a certain minimum number of class hours. -GSAs seldom hold the same positions throughout the course of their graduate years, at times moving from Teaching Assistant to Research Assistant or other positions. -As students, GSAs receive certain tax breaks from the government and discounts from the University (on foot- ball tickets for example) not available to regular faculty members. -The hiring process for regular faculty .is far more involved and rigorous than it is for GSAs. VERACRUYSEE tried to direct Sussman's testimony away from the teaching duties required of many GSAs. Cousens, the GEO attorney, took an opposite tack. In his cross-examination he attempted to direct testimony away from the course work required of a GSA, and concentrated on the teaching and research requirements which create similarities between a GSAs work and that of a regular faculty member. Cousens also established that a GSA must perform certain services for the University in order to retain his monetary compensation, and that departments must allow for a certain number of GSA positions in their budget each year. IN ADDITION, Cousens showed that: -GSAs receive money from the University for their services and are paid on a monthly basis, as faculty members generally are. -GSAs help design courses, reading requirements and tests. -GSAs may grade tests, quizzes, papers and class participation. -Many teaching assistants could conceivably get a teaching job at a junior college or community college. Parker said the Chinese were eager to buy from Daedalus because, "It's a matter of production capabilities and it's cheaper from us." Parker said, "I know legitimate security concerns and I don't see any in this area," adding he is trying to find the real reason for the license denial. Parker travelled to Washington last week in an attempt to find answers to his questions and visited ten gover- nment agencies but had no success. The status of his license remains un- changed, and he was told national security reasons were impending its approval. Last Friday Parker and his lawyers filed four Freedom of Infor- mation Act (FOIA) requests for the disclosure of the "real reasons" for the denial, and the company is awaiting the ten-day interim before his requests are answered. MARK ROLLINSON, one of Dykema's partners in their Washington office said, "I'm hopeful action will be taken to respond to the FOIA filings." He said that several agencies are in- volved in the case and it is unclear which one is causing the problem. The agencies which participate in the decision-making must reach a unanimous decision to grant the licen- se. "There's only one fly in the ointment and we'll find the fly, but we believe every secruity agency is represented on the joint committee." A joint operating committee com- posed of members of various executive agencies delivered an advisory opinion to the Export Administration of the Department of Commerce. However, the names of the members of that committee have not been revealed. Spokespersons for the Departments of Defense, Commerce, State, and the National Security Council were either unavailable or refused to comment on reasons for the denial. Parker said the Chinese technologists' "level of indignation is not high at us, they're very friendly and understanding" but he was unsure of their opinion of the U.S. government. Parker said the technologists "have no recourse to do anything" though he sent copies of the governmental com- munications that he had received to the Chinese government, against the State Department's wishes. he'll worship uour golden bod ' Long before there's summer sun you'll be a golden goddess with Tan-A-Mat.
