STANFORD, Calif. (AP)-Po-
lice stud yesterday they ar rest-
ad 294 persons wvho refused to
end a sit-in at a Stanford Uni-
versity building sparked by the
school's financial ties to apart-
heid- Souith Africa.
The count of detusmtrators
hooked on charges of trespass
and failure to disperse tuarked
the higheat number ever arrest-
ed on the campus, pilice said.
It also marked the-first masa
arrests at Stanford since the
school was the scene of anti-
Vietnam war protests in the late
19611 and early 19710.
THE DEMONSTRATORS, most
of them apparently Stanford
stttdents, were arrested .yester-
day morning for refuinlg to
leave the- Old Student Union
building. Some' went limp and
were carried from the building,
bttt moat walked out.
Most of the protesters were re-
leased after being hooked.
The sit-in followed a decision
by university trustees to 'ab-
atain on a Ford Motor Co. stock-
holder proposal to withdraw,
from South Africa. The demon-
stratoru had demanded that
Stanford support the proposal.
The university, which holds
93,3511 shares of Ford stock, said

INDIANAPOLIS, tnd. (API)-
Police held two men yesterday
in the slaying of a wealthy In-
dianapolis widow and said $1
million in cash and some jew-
elry apparently stolen from her
home were recovered.
'The Marion County Sheriff's
Department said Manuel Lee
Robison, 29, Indianapolis, was
arrested -Monday night on a
charge of firut-degree murder
and John Williams, 38, Indian-
