"Are you David Berkowitz," asked Judge Brown. "Yes," replied the defendant softly, a smile ever present dur- ing v a r i o u s appearances throughout the day. He was clad in worn jeans, brown suede shoes, a light blue and white, short-sleeved shirt. His dark hair was unruly, but not unduly long, his eyes clear and blue, his skin smooth. BROWN ORDERED Berko- witz remanded to Brooklyn's Kings County Hospital where psychiatrists will determine whether Berkowitz is mentally capable of pleading to the charges and standing trial. A report was expected within 30 days. "i think the accused is en- titled to a defense," said Philip Petz, one of two lawyers who represented the defendant af- ter the bail hearing ended. "We all have an obligation to pro- tect his precious rights." But 100 to200 persons on the side-walk outside the court house disagreed, shouting in unison, "Kill! Kill! Kill the bas- tard!" ALSO IN disagreement was bartender, John Diel, who es- caped injury Jan. 30 when his girl friend, Christine Freund, 26, became Son of Sam's sec- ond fatality. Diel declared, "What use does he have for society? They should just let him loose, and let other people take care of him. He has no place on the earth." And Moskowitz's father, Jer- his ready adoption of the Son ry, said bitterly: "If they left of Sam label, which Codd said me alone with him, I'd look at . was first used by investigators him and say, 'Why?' U'staff gears up for annual Fallon-&slaught (Continued from Page 3) with student concern for pressing national and local issues, According to Johnson, the administration is anticipating great student concern for the issues of University inyestments, particu- larly in South Africa, and nuclear energy use. Other top priority items include housing and health maintenance costs. JOHNSON, TOO, IS LOOKING FORWARD to the return of University students. "It's kind of lonely around here," he la- ments. "Although some are beginning to. dribble back now and it's great seeing them.' Most University officials think they have their hands full preparing for a mere 40,000 returning students. Perhaps they should consider the lot of Assistant Athletic Director Charles Harris who is responsible for sprucing up Michigan Stadium for the 101,000-plus football fans who will invade this Fall. Harris says workmen at the stadium have spent the sum- mer resurfacing 10 of the 44 concrete seating areas. In addi- tion, Harris says restroom facilities have been refinished and remodeled and a parking area adjacent to Crisler Arena has been paved. Over at University Cellar assistant manager Bruce Wilson is making plans for the annual event known as 'book rush.' Wilson and his staff have been querying faculty all summer as to what books they will be using, and of course, ordering the books. Later this month Cellar personnel will haul their stock of books and students supplies into the union ballroom and begin training an extra 200 employes. 231 south state arts Tonight, Good Buddies!
