Police find missing
GM executive dead

McDowell's disappearance had
baffled investigators because of
the lack of any ransom demand.
"We still aren't sure if this is
a kidnaping, a h o m i c i d e or
something else," a Detroit Po-
lice spokesperson told reporters
before the body was discovered.
HE LEFT HIS home in the
well-to-do northern suburb of
West Bloomfield Township at
6:45 a.m. Wednesday for a
speaking engagement dt the
Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dear-
brs. His wife, Ann, reported
him missing after she was ni-
fied that he failed to show up.
McDowell's 1977-model Chevy
station wagon was found before
dawn yesterday near the State
Fairgrounds on Detroit's north-
ern edge, bordered by Ferndale.
Investigators found a sports
coat and "miscellaneous papers"
belonging to McDowell on the
car floor.
THERE HAD been no ransom
demand following his disappear-
ance.
Neither McDowell's family nor
GM has received any ransom
demand, the spokesperson said.
"There seems to he no ex-
planation for h is disappear-
ance," said West Bloomfield De-
tective Roy Clark. "He was a
good family man and a good
employe."
McDOWELL, who is married
with two teen-aged children,
has been with GMl since 1958

The latest incident took place
in November, 1975, when Timo-
thy Stempel, 13-year-old son of
GM executive Robert Stempel,
was abducted while skateboard-
ing near his home in Bloomfield
Hills, aonther well-to-do north-
ern suburb.
The boy was r leased un-
harmed three days later after
the payment of a $150,000 ran-
som. Two young Detroit men
were later arrested in the kid-
naping, convicted and sentenced
to prison.
