University :z Cx Iostpital said Violante had giv- en police a description of the gunman. "Ile actually saw him," said Dr. Jeffrey Freed- man. But Freedman, an ophthal- mologist, noted that Violante had lost one eye to the gun- man, with the other at least partially damaged. "I don't know if he (Violante) can iden- tify him, since we don't know if he'll be able to see," Freed- man said. WHILE MAYOR Abraham Beame doubled the Son of Sam force with 100 more officers, two families kept a vigil at a Brooklyn hospital. Pat and Teresa Violante waited to learn if their son would see again, and Jerry and Neysa Moskovitz waited to see if their daughter would live. The odds were not good in ei- ther case. After one painful visit into the intensise care unit where neurosurgeons were battling to save his doughter's life, Mos- kowitiz said, "She's not res- sponding, she's not responding. I look at that machine and the lines aren't going tip and down." AT ANOTHER POINT, at- tendants wheeled Violante out of surgery, his shattered eyes. fully bandaged. "His eyes, God, his eyes," moaned his father. Neurosurgeons worked for eight hours on Moskowitz Sun- day morning and afternoon, re- moving a portion of her brain. She was taken back into sur- gery Sunday night in an at- tempt to reduce swelling in the brain. But the swelling continued yesterday. Ira Clark, assistant administrator of Kings County U1,Ta e extend deadline By SUE WARNER Members of the Washtenaw County Building Trades Council voted Sunday night to extend their present contract with the University on a day-to-day basis while the two sides continue con- tract negotiations. The union's contract was previously set to expire last Sunday at midnight. According to the union's chief negotiator, James Murphy, the council membership voted for the extension by a two-thirds margin. THE COUNCIL represents some 300 skilled trades workers including carpenters, electricians, painters and plumbers. Russel Reinter, University personnel director, said yesterday the University favors the extension. "We'd much rather see the contract extended than a strike," he said. Both sides have agreed to bring in a.state-appointed mediator to assist in the talks. Any suggestions the mediator may offer will not be binding on either party. ACCORDING TO REISTER, the University was unable to con- tact the mediator, Ed Phillips yesterday. Reister added the talks will resume as soon as arrangements can be made with Phillips. "We'll begin again as soon as possible," he said. "Both teams are ready to go." Murphy said the negotiations are tentatively scheduled to resume either today or tomorrow. Neither side would comment on the specific contract proposals which remain unresolved, although they have stated that wages are the major unsettled issue. }ospital, said although dcter had done everything the could for Moskowitz "we ar not very optimistic" that se will live. SHORTLY AFTER noony ves terday, the Moskowitz famai was brought back to the hospi tal by police and taken to the room where their daughter clung to life. They were told their daughter's heart had stop- ped briefly during the morn- ing. She was revived and was being maintained by a respira- tor. Doctors reported that young Violante was out of danger, i- cid and stable and talking to his parents. But surgeons had removed his left eye. They sad that although the right eye c o u I d distinguish lightness from dark, it would probaby be days before they knew he- ther he would see again. Police say of one thing er are sure - the madntm he seek is a marksman. The gunman, firing as usa from a two-banded crouch_ like the combative stance used by police and marksmen -- pumped four shots into Violat- te's car as the couple sat un- der a full moon, looking out on New York harbor. Two struck Moskowitz, with one lodging at the base of her brain. A third tore through Violante's left eye, puncttred his nose asd grazed the right eye. The fourth missed. U.S. House discusses energy plan (Continuedfrom Pagelt comprehensive national energy policy now or invite "economie disruption and peril to our se- curity." Rep. Thomas Ashley (D-Ohi}, chairman of the House Energy Committee, acknowledged tal thle. House is considering the tough energy plan in the midst of a summer when there is abundant gasoline for vacation trips and no sign of energy shortages elsewhere. But if Congress does not act before the country's reserves be- gin to run low, Ashley said, "We rob the nation of options nos available by deluding ouretes that the energy problem is of no urgency." House Republicans disagreed, questioning whether there is a genuine shortage of energy re- sources and complaining that the energy package was being forced through Congress without sufficient consideration. REPUBLICAN Rep. Barber Conable of New York said en- ergy measures approved by Ashley's c o m mi t t e e "were taken too hastily and are a r' her stamp of propoals sibmi ted to them by the Carter ad- ministration." Conable said neither Cartel nor House Democrats hae dol enough to encourage the produc tion of untapped reservoirs Ot oil and natural gas, but have itt stead given too much emphasis to energy conservation.
