Faultywelds halt oil flow

"The shutdown was uncalled for," the Alyaska offi ial said
at Valdez yesterday. "The pipe is perfectly sound. This is very
frustrating."
HE SAID, "I do not understand why this last-minute order was
given."
Alyeska had hoped to get oil to Valdez late yesterday, but the
latest halt meant the crude might not reach Valdez until late
today or tomorrow.
The shutdown is another mishap in the series of disasters
which have plagued the pipeline since it opened June 20.
IN FAIRBANKS, a 26-year-old fur trapper who once worked on
the pipeline, is being held on $100,000 bond on charges of malicious
destruction of property in an alleged attempt to sabotage the '
pipeline last week.
Damage from three explosions which police describe as an
attempt to sabotage the trans-Alaska oil pipeline apparently went
undetected for more than three days.
Roger McCoy, an investigator for the Alaska State Troopers,
said yesterday that the series of blasts that tore insulation from
the pipeline and dented two vertical support columns occurred at
3 a.m. July 20--a week ago Wednesday.
DEPUTY PUBLIC Safety Commissioner Larry Talbert said
Tuesday the explosions had taken place on or before Saturday, an
indication that was when the damage was spotted.
The blasts did not harm the 48-inch pipe itself, and the flow
of oil through the $7.7-billion pipeline was not interrupted.
Security men from the Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. did nothy >
notify the state troopers about the explosions along the 800 mite
line until Monday night.
