All night long, for 12 whole nnings, the Tigers chased the Royals, only to lose by a 5-4 count on a 12th inning home run by Al Cowens. T H R O U G H O U T the entire contest, the Tigers never once led. In fact, over the first eight innings, their entire of- fense amounted to a pair of hits by Rusty Staub, plus two walks. Royal starter Dennis Leonard befuddled the Tiger bats and appeared to be headed for a two-hit shutout going into the ninth inning. Then the slum- oering Tiger - bats began to awaken. MiltMay's two-out ninth-inn- ing single capped the Tiger rally which sent the contest into extra innings. TITO FUENTES led off with a long triple into right-center- only the Tigers' third hit all night. "It should have been an- other 72," Trevino said. "It was a lot like yesterday - only this time I didn't make any bogeys. That's not be- cause of the way I hit the ball. It's because of the way I scrambled. "I had 26 putts again today. "My short game and my put- ting is what saved me." He also holed a bunker shot for a birdie, chipped close on what he called "an impossible shot" to save par and once skipped a low shot off the sur- iace of a pond safely onto the bank. "If I can start hitting the ball, I've got an excellent chance to win," Trevino said after posting his 135 total, nine under par for two trips over the hilly, 7,090 yard Glen Abbey Golf Club course. "I've, got to start hitting the hall better. I can't keep on put- 'ing and chipping like this. I can't figure on 52 putts for the .ast two rounds. Usually I'm pretty good tee to green and have trouble with my short game. Now I'm putting and chipping great and hitting the ball awful." Jack Nicklaus dropped a 15- loot putt for an eagle on the !8th hole and, tied Tom Kite For second at 138, six under par and three behind Trevino. Each 'hot a second round 70. Nicklaus' effort, fashioned in the afternoon when swirl, ing winds were at their trick- iest, was wildly erratic. "Five bogeys, five birdies and an eagle. Need I say any more?" asked Nicklaus, the de- signer of this course that is scheduled to be the permanent site ofthe Canadian national championship. Ray Floyd, with a 67 that ranked as the day's best round, was alone at 139. George Cadle was next at 72-140. ~Tpv't ~fthe k)ai4 'By The Asswciated 'ress Bird's test flight set DETROIT - Pitcher Mark "The Bird" Fidrych of the De- troit Tigers is schedted to test his ailing shoulder withsose light throwing Monday. "They seem to think it's an inflammation of a small mscle in the shoulder area," Houk said. He said he would not consider using Fidrych as a reliever for a brief test. Ex-Spartan AWOL PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - All-Pro linebacker Brad Van Pelt failed to report with the veterans to the New York Giants' NFL training camp yesterday. The ex-Michigan State star, who re- mained at his home in Owosso, Mich., said "the main reason I'm not there is the contract." The Pro Bowl linebacker is believed to be demanding that certain performance clauses be written into his contract. A Giant for the past four season, Van Pelt played out his option last year. However, he dfcided to remain with the Giants and attempt to work out a new long-term contract. Andy Robustelli, the Giants' general manager, said Van Pelt must report to camp "or get fined."
