It is the frenzy that worries trainer Billy Turner. "MY ONLY concern is how lie acts in the paddock, some- thing you always hear about. And, of course, the gate is a concern," Turner said Friday morning after sharpening his heavy favorite with a three- eighths of a mile blowout in 34 2/5 seconds. ''Those two things can beat you." When Derby horses leave the stable area Saturday they will enter a world of noise and hu- man movement that can be un- nerving. Seattle Slew has twice been schooled in the paddock during afternoons this week, but there is no real way a By The Associated Press Vitale moves up DETROIT - Dick Vitale, the colorful basketball coach of the University of Detroit basketball team, was named the school's athletic director yesterday. Vitale led the Titans into the NCAA tournament last sea- son and has actively sought the directorship. lie reportedly was to sign a four-year contract for $35,000 the first year, $37,500 the second year, $40,000 the third year and $42,500 the final year. Vitale came to Detroit in 1973 from Rutgers, where he had been an assistant coach. Since then, the Titans have had seasons of 17-9, 17-9, 19-8 and 25-4. In the NCAA playoffs, Detroit beat Middle Tennessee be- fore losing to Michigan. Bucks on display COLUMBUS - Ohio State's Orange Bowl champions, under- going player and coaching revamping, wind up their spring foot- ball drills today with a public scrimmage in Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes have been rebuilt by Coach Woody Hayes, em- barking on his 27th season with the defending Big Ten Conference cochampions with Michigan. Ohio State lost three offensive and three defensive regu- lars from its 8-2-1 squad last fall. To fill those voids, Hayes has switched a handful of key play- ers to new positions. Gone are tackle Lou Pietrini, offensive guard Bill Lukens and Pete Johnson on offense and All-American end Bob Brudzinski, tackle Nick Buonamidi and linebacker Ed Thompson from the defense. So Hayes has moved regular center Mark Lang to Lukens' spot, many-positioned Tim Vogler to center, Paul Ross from linebacker to defensive end and Ken Fritz from defensive tackle to offensive guard. Three regulars, tight end Jimmy Moore, offensive tackle Doug Mackie and safety Ray Griffin, will miss the spring game because of offseason knee operations. 'He would get overanxious to run," he said. "You can't be over- anxious in the Derby. You got to be relaxed." But Turner felt Seattle Slew was almost too relaxed before the Wood Memorial, a race he won by 3 lengths, adding: "Seattle Slew is acting closer to the way he was before the Fla- mingo Stakes." IN THAT RACE the son of Bold Reasoning opened up a 10- lenth lead and coasted home by four. Derby Field LOUISv1LLE, Ky. One who might find it diffi- cult to relax is jockey Jean Cruguet, Although the French- man has ridden Seattle Slew to all of his victories, he has been criticized by some trainers and in the media. "I guarantee the jockey who's going to feel pressure is Cru- guet," said Laz Barrera, train- er of Affiliate. "But the jockey on the favorite always has the most pressure." Turner is not expecting a one-horse race and he talked about some of Seattle Slew's 14 rivals. "I WAS VERY impressed with For the Moment in the Blue Grass and 1e looks good," said Turner. "Affiliate appears well, and Steve's Friend certainly made an impression in winning the Hollywood Derby. And there are a couple of others who also could run well."
