Saturday, July 9, 1977 THE MICH-IGAN DAILY Page Eleven Showdown 0 los inOpen Nicklaus, Watson- pace field By The Asociated Press TURtNBERRY, Scotland - A pair of madgnificent 65s, corn- n))""d by Jack Nicklaus and Tim t1ison in one of golf's ?!d trilling duels, left the Itiihopen championship in a t e andc set up a classic show- down fo)r today's final round. Ir as fun," Nicklaus, the creaking of world golf, said fhfierce, .tense, nerve- tA 'kiflit match with the re- .ntle Watson yesterday. mo.'IFNTS LATER Watson, the ;(°tt apparent to Jack's ran h eco ed in the exact 'Ilt aIs fan." ~I ic>trying to make it a 0n1 tttatt toarnament," Nicklaus isTon was trying to make i ta row-an tournament. And we made it a two-man twlirna- mnent. It set up a rematch of their spectacular a I r a g g 1 e in the Masters. Watson won that one. THERE ARE two dift' rences. This time, as they were on this gloomy, rainy, stornsy Friday, they'll be paired together. In Augusa, Ga., they were not in the same group. "And this. time I'm not start- ing out the last round a couple of strokes back," Nicklaus point- edt ot. Watson just smiled. Nicklaus was asked if the challenge is greater since it comes 'from Watson, the man who is threatening his long- time supremnacy. "THIERE'S ALWAYS a chal- leage," Nicklaus said. And then he ticked thsem off: {There was Palmer and Play- er and Trevino and Weiskopf and Miller. 'There's always a challenge. 'That's what it's all about" Watson smiled. He'd just matched strokes with the greatest player the world has known, the man who says he's now in his golfing prime, and emerged with a mer- ciless stand-off, dead even. IN THlE END, they had to settle with matching scores of 203, seven under par for three onds over Turnberry's tem- peramental Ailes course, stretch- ing 6,875 yards along the Ayr- shire coast. It is not, howeever, completely a Itwo-man show. Ben Cren- show's in there, too. Gentle Ben finished birdie-birdie for a 66 that left him a 206, three strokes back. "I JUST DON'T know bow many birdies those guys have got left," Crenshaw said. "I think you know what winning this tournament would mean to me, sos I won't dwell on it." Only three other men were under par figures and, at 209, they trailed the intimidating Nicklaus and the unawed Wat- son by sax big shotu. This game keeps going in any weather.
