The agents conducted simul- taneous raids on the East and West coasts at 9 a.m. EDT. A SCORE of agents moved into the Washington office while ethers stood by to help if needed. At one point they used a power saw to get through a locked door, an FBI spokes- person said. A spokesperson for the church, founded in the early 1950's, contended the raids were retaliation for the church's dis- closures of illegal drug traf- ricking by Interpol, an interna- tional police information agen- cy. It said the FBI was in- volved. In a 33-page affadaVit filed with a U. S. magistrate to ob- tain the Washington search war- rant, the FBI said the raids yere conducted to seize copies of 161 documents stolen from the Justice Department and the Internal Revenue Service. T H E WASHINGTON search warrcnt listed seven pages of documents allegedly stolen in "976 from files in offices of the U. S. attorney, Justice Depart- ment tax division and the Inter- - nali Revenue headquarters. Seven hours after the raid began, an FBI spokesperson said agents were still sorting and making records of docu- ments at the Washington Church of Scientology head- quarters. Founded by science fiction ,vriter L. Ron Hubbard in 1950, Scientology claims aome 3.1 million adherents around the world. It embraces a philosophy which seeks, through the use .f controversial counselling measures, particularly the "E- tioter," a lie - detector like de- vice, to aid its followers gain self - knowledge and self-aware- ness. An affadavit signed by FBI agent Robert Tittle said the church planted employes in the IRS to get leads on files that other church employes obtain- ed by stealth after hours, repro- duced on copying machines and I eturned to file.
