Frday, July 8, 1977 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Eleven Yanks dominate British golf Maltbie leads field; Hayes breaks record TURNBERRY, Scotland (A - Mark Hayes, with the best score ever in this 106-year-old event, and Roger Maltbie led a talented group of Americans who turned the second round of the British Open yesterday into a shoot out more typical of the U. S. tour. Hayes, the Oklahcma quiet man who won the U. S. Tourna- ment Players championship earlier thi, year, made the most of the ideal playing conditions and his new, cross-handed putting style for a 63, by two strokes the best score this tournament has ever permitted. Maltbie, meanwhile, romped to a 66 and sole control of the lead at 137, three under par on Turnberry's Ailsa course, 6,875 imposing yards that wee stripped of their terror by the 'absence of the prevailing gales off the Irish Sea and the unusually warm sunshine. U. S. Open champion Hubert Green had a hole-in-one and a string of five consecutive birdies and admittedly "was thinking of 60" before cooling off to a 66 that left him in a four way tie with three other Americans who really ftit they should have done better. Sharing second with Green one sh!)t out of the lead at 138, were Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Masters champ Tom Wat- son, who own a total of five British Open crowns among them. Nicklaus and Trevino each be geyed the 18th hole - which would put them on top - after birdyi-ig the s'th. Each matched par 70. None was completely enchanted with it. Trevino, who has never been the same since struck by light- ning two years ago and is still fighting his way back from sur- gery that threatened his career, missed two putts of less than four feet in length on two of the last three holes. One would have given him a tie for the lead. Two would have made him the leader alone. Watson, who didn't start until 3:55 p.m. local time, said he became tired "from just waiting arouid to play. I was ,half asleep all day. I had all kinds of trouble trying to concentrate." And the mighty Nicklaus barely was able to contain his an- noyance over his putting problems. "I made absolutely nothing," he said. "Off the way I played, it could have been a very low round." He missed three times from about eight feet, three more in the four to five foot range and failed on one of about 18 inches. OKLAHOMAN MARK HAYES displays the scorecard that details his amazing round of 63 in yes- terday's second round of the British Open. Hayes' score was two strokes better than any ever re- corded in the 106-year history of the event. His record included six birdies, one eagle, and only one bogey--on the eighteenth hole. Then, in keeping with the gambling motif of a Las Vegas fight, the former numbers banker from Cleveland noted the bout was being announced on July 7, '77 and said "In the numbers business that would be a triple 7." "It's going to be power against deception," Norton, noted as a puncher, said of the bout against his former sparring partner, whose fight- ing reputation is one of clev- erness.
