'nor Ten THE M{CHiGAN DAI.Y Friddy, Juy 8, 1 77 Nge Ten THE MICHIGAN DAILY Friday, July8, 19~'~ Life on amidwayv (tinured from s e )3 "We can't take a bath every two, threemintes" Mendes said three years lnthe carnival business are enough for her. "I wanst to get a job as a nurse's aide when I go back home. Id's going to be my last suminer." ALTHOUGH HER 13 year old daughter wants to take over the business when she and her hus- band quit, Mendez said she doesn't want her other children. in the carnival business. Mendez said that being a car- nival worker is a hard life and she feels sorry for the people who work with one. "They like it 'cause they can't get no other jobs," she said with a deep sigh. "Some of them probably never had a home to start out with so this kind of life is probably all right for them" Belcher alleges illegal votes (O*tlanued from Piage 1) indicated that the revelation could show voter fraud occurred and the illegal votes determined the results of the trial. "IF WORST comes to worst I suppose we could subpoena them and ask their address and determine if they registered to vote" he said. In addition, Henry said judi- cial precedent has it that when the number of substantiated il- legal. votes surpass the elec- tion's win margin the election is usually voided. In a legal maneuver Wheeler's lawyer Robert Grace filed a mo- tion with Monroe County Circuit Judge James Kelley asking that the City of Ann Arbor, the city clerk and the County Board of Canvassers be included as de- fendants in the suit. BELCHER'S ORIGINAL com- plaint only names Wheeler as a defendant, Grace said the reason for the motion was that the complaint involved parties other than Wheeler. "I means that the suit cannot be ajudicated without these par- ties because relief is sought aaginst them" Grace said. A HEARING will he held on July 18 in Monroe County Court to determine whether Judge Kel- ly will accept or reject Grace's motion. To complicate the case furth- er, Henry has filed an amended complaint against Wheeler. The two versions are similar except the amended provision has dropped the request for a new election to be held. "We felt to ask the judge to order a new election would be inappropriate" to this type of complaint Henry said. THE COMPLAINT says Whee- ler abtained the Mayor's pet il- legally because of alleged errors by the oCunty Board of Canvas- sers in certifying the election results. The first count alleges five machines malfunctioned on elec- tion day and the Board of Can- vassers failed to determine the the extent of "inaccurate vote recordation." The second count clain at least one ballot - a vote for Belcher-'was discounted and at least two absentee ballots votes for Wheeler-were wrong- fully counted. 'Ie third count alleges four voters who had cast their bal- lots for Wheeler were either im.. properly registered or not rel- istered at all.
