The message "Pump Station No. 1 on line.. Let's keep mov- ing," passed along the pipeline's intenal communications line, announcing the resumption of the oil flow. The line was shut down Mon- day evening when work crews inadvertently allowed frigid liq- uid nitrogen to enter a section of pipe bured 20 feet below ground near Pump Station No. 8. The nitrogen, 290 degrees be- low zero, settled in the lowest portion of an L-shaped section of pipe, causing severa-six-inch cracks that extended through the welds linking the pipe to the main 48-inch pipe. Nitrogen escaped through the leak - enough to fill two miles of the line. But there was no oil in the area of the crack. Nitro- gen is moved ahead of the oil during startup to purge the line f oxygen and avoid the possibil- ity of combustion. The nitrogen atso aids in identifying leaks. li was stopped at mile 472, 10 miles north of Pump Station No 8, after the leak was spot- ted. The faculty L-haped pipe, raled an "elbow," was cut out aso well as a five-foot chunk of the main pipe on otl, sides of the "L" A new section of pipe was installed and welded into the line.- The Mekong River is 2,600 miles long.
