That she did more of the first and less of the other two in her last two albums confused followers who 'knew her, whole appeal. Her latest LP, Sweet Forgive- ness, (Warner Bros. BS-2990), is not so much as a return to an earlier stance as a clearer look at the total artist. While Raitt does not grant us an original song (and hasn't since Give It Up), her general approach is not confined to the ballads that were the focus of both Street- lights and Home Plate. BONNIE ROSE to fame as a young woman who could sing the blues with amazing strength and conviction and still handle a hot slide guitar. She tourned, a lot, making a name, and her live show always displayed that rougher side of her - the-Cali- fornia-girl-turned-hlues-mama. TONITE at SECOND CHANCE FOXX 994-5350 Raitt While Sweet Forgiveness is far from stacked in that direc- tion, numbers like Eric Kaz's, "Gamblin' Man" and Daniel Moore's title cut are Raitt's strongest performances since Takin' My Time (a title which finally appears as a song by Bill Payne on this LP). That album balanced the various forms and styles she uses and this one is structured in a similar way so the fast and hard stuff doesn't get lost among the slower com- positions.
