nesday, June 29, 1977 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Eleven Young American upsets Dent; iorg stops Nastase at Wimbledon By The AssociatedP ress WIMBLEDON, England-John McEnroe, 18 years and 4 months old, upset Phil Dent of Australia yesterday and became the youngest semifinalist in 100 years of Wimbledon. The fair-haired left-hander from Douglaston, N.Y., who plays as an amateur among big-money professionals, won ,-4, 8-9, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. He set another record -at the same time. Ile is the first man ever to make the semifinals of the world's greatest tennis tourna- ment after playing through the qualifying competition. "I wasn't sure if I would get into the tournament at all," McEnroe said. "And when I did get in, I didn't expect to win r more than a few games in each set." The young hero of the centenary tournament now faces the No. > 1 seed, Jimmy Connors of Belleville, Ill., who defeated Byron Bertram of South Africa 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The other semifinal will be between Vitas Gerulaitis of Howard Beach, N.Y. and defending champion Bjorn Borg of Sweden. Gerulaitis overran Billy Martin of Palos Verdes, Calif., 6-2, 8-9, 6-2, 6-2 while Borg played some of his finest tennis to win 6-0, 8-6, 6-3 over Ilie Nastase of Romania, the man he beat in last year's final. McEnroe was listed No. 270 in last year's computerized world rankings, but he ranks second in the U.S. Junior list, behind Larry Gottfried. He said he does not take prize money because he has been planning to go to Stanford University. "Connors? No, I've never played him. In fact, I don't think I've ever met him. But I would know him if I saw him." Connors had to work hard for his victory over Bertram, a y- broad-shoulder man with powerful ground strokes. Borg sped about the center court and angled his shots with such subtlety that Nastase was often immbolized. The Romanian created he usual diversions. He held up play by arguing over line calls and later complained that a bird's feather had floated down in front of him. Gerulaitis, who looks a little like Borg without a beard, reached the semifinals for the first time with a convincing win over Martin. The semifinals are set for Thursday. STEVE'S LUNCH 1313 S.
