The parliament elected in Wednesday's nationwide ballot- ing will have only three clerics -- none for the Church hierar- chy once prominently repre- sented in the late Gen. Fran- cisco Franco's right-wing gov- ernment. THE WEAKENING of the Church's political strength, wel- comed by many clergymen, comes 40 years after the Basque bishop of Vitoria urged his followers to join Franco "to defend the rights of God, of the Catholic Church and of the fatherland." Final returns from the coun- try's first free parliamentary election in 41 years will not be available until Tuesday, but late results yesterday confirm- ed the center-left trend. Premier Adolfo Suarez' cen- ter coalition held the lead with 30 per cent of the popular vote to 28.8 per cent for the Social- ist Workers party, a moderate leftist group. The Communists, with 9.4 per cent of the vote, moved ahead of the rightist Popular Alliance, with 8.3 per cent, as the nation's third lead- ing political bloc. FRANCO'S RUBBER - stamp parliament, appointed by the dictator, had three bishops as members. But during the recent election campaign, the Church hierarchy stayed on the side- lines after Spain's leading cleric, Enrique Cardinal Vin- cente y Tarancon, discouraged priests from seeking office. The cardinal, fearful that pol- itics -might tear the Church apart, has tried to steer the Church on a course of political neutrality during his six years as archbishop of Madrid. As in his classic REPULSION, the theme here is obsessive paranoia. Polanski him- self plays a timid file clerk who takes over the apartment of a woman who has jumped to her death from it. He slowly becomes convinced that the other occupants of the house are driving him to become the dead girl. Are they? Or is his mind tenant of -his body and about to be evicted? Along with the beautiful Issebelle Adjani (STORY OF ADELE H.), who plays his only friend, the film features some of the most chilling images to ever hit the screen. "The TENANT is a poetic nightmare about punishment imposed on an unguilty man who merely entertained great fear ofg uilt." -Penelope Gilliatt.
