PRAGUE-The dowr appears wide open for Los Angeles to
tage the Olympic Games of 1984, if it wants them.
The Intertational Olympic Committee (IOC) is worried
bh the prospect that an American city may be the only can-
didate. At the IOC's 79th session, which opened in Prague
yesterday, there are some behind-the-scenes efforts to whip
op interest elsewhere. '
BUT THE SPECTRE of Montreal, which still faces a huge
\ debt following the Games last summer, does not encourage
candidates.
Bids have to be posted to the IOC by next Oct. 31, and the
decision will be made at next year's session in Athens.
Los Angeles is one of six U.S. cities reportedly interested
Shosting the Games, and the U.S. National Olympic Com-
ittee (USNOC) will have to give its backing to one of them.
The other American cities reportedly interested are At-
lanta, Miami, New York, Washington, D.C. and Chicago.
MEANWHILE, a six-man delegation from Lake Placid, "'

paid one last emotional visit to
his Shea Stadium locker yester-
day and broke down in tears as
he tried to describe his feelings
for New York Mets fans.

ballpark to pack his bags before
joining the Reds in Montreal.-
He was discussing his feel-
ings with about two dozen re-
porters when one newsman
asked if he had one last word
for Mets fans.
Seaver, obviously moved, ask-
ed for a break in the question-
ing. After about 10 minutes, he
returned to the impromptu news
conference, but still was teary-
eyed and choked up.
"I know t h e y appreciated
watching me . . ." he began.
But again he hesitated.
"If I can retain enough com-
posure to talk for about 60 sec-

onds, I'll have it made," Seaver
said. But he could not.
He started again..
"As far as the fans go, I've
given them a great number of
thrills and they've been equal-
ly returned," he said. "The
ovation I got the other night
..." and again he hesitated.
Finally, he asked to borrow a
reporter's notebook and pen to
write a statement. He asked
another reporter to read it.
"... and the ovation the other
night, after passing Sandy Kou-
fax in career strikeouts will be
one of the most memorable and
warm moments of my life."
The conflict between Seaver
and Grant began in March 1976
during difficult contract nego-
tiations. "My loyalty was used
against me," said Seaver, who
was labeled an "ingrate" by
Grant at that time. "I saw nine
years being thrown out of the
window. If I was guilty of any-
thing at that point, I was guilty
of being extremely naive."
