MADRID, Spain (AP) - Reformist Premier
Adolfo Suarez' center coalition was favored to
win Spain's first election in 41 years today de-
spite polls showing a closing surge by the left.
Candidates were being guarded by police, and
the army protected key communications and
energy centers to prevent violence aimed at up-
setting the vote.
MORE THAN 80 PER CENT of Spain's 23
million eligible voters were expected to cast bal-
lots for b new parliament to replace the pone
appointed by the late dictator Francisco Franco,
and definitiVe results were expected early tomor-
row, election. officials said.
The nation was generally peaceful after a
noisy, but issueless, three-week campaign by
more than 5,000 candidates and,157 parties seek-
ing 557 seats in the first elected parliament-or
Cortes-since the end of the Spanish Civil War
in 1939. That wartime parliament was elected in
1936.
Two independent polls showed late gains by
the leftist Spanish Socialist Workers party -
PSOE - and the newly legalized Communist
party. But a spokesman for Suarez said the
premier's office was confident his Democratic
Center Union would win a solid plurality and

say in power.
THE GENERAL INDEX of the Madrid stock
exchange jumped 2.5 points, its biggest gain since
the death of Franco 19 msnths lagl. Brokers said
the rise reflectecl confilence in iSUare' ability
to, carry out free elections with snore than 70
per cent of Spain's electorate voting for the first
time in their lives.
One late poll put the PSOE, led by 35-year-
old Felipe Gonzalez, 3.3 percentage points ahead
of the 44-year-old premier in the popular vote,
while a private poll by the independent Mad-
rid newspaper. Informaciones gave Suarez a 2
per cent lead over. the Socialists.
THE PREMIER'S OFFICE, privy to unpub-
lished surveys by the government's Public Opin-
ion Institute, said it believed polls giving Suarez
30 per cent of the popular vote were 10 per cent
too low.
Coming after Suarez' democratic Center Union
and the Socialists in the polls were the Neo-
Francoist Popular Alliance of former Franco
cabinet member Manuel Fraga, the Spanish Com-
munist Alliance of Prof. Enrique Tierno Galvan,
and the Christian Democrats of Joaquin Ruiz
Gimenez.
