"Because I didn't confess," Narciso said. "They told me I would be needing it." Narcio, the first defense witness in the 10-week-old trial, said "No I did not," every time defense attorney T h o m a s O'Brien asked her if she in- jected anything into any of the patients she is charged with poisoning. NARCISO SPOKE casually during most of her testimony, smiling often at the jury. O'Brien likewise questioned Narciso in relaxed, conversa- tional tone. O'Brien asked her of her family - four brothers and four sisters. Narciso sent the courtroom into laughter when she said she didn't know the age of her oldest sister. "I don't know," she said. "She's the eldest sister." Narciso explained she was helping her younger sister through nursing school - a family tradition - until she was indicted. "I was -unem- ployed and I couldn't help her any more," she said. The witness also told of how she met her co-defendant Leo- nora Perez, tut how they were not close friends until recently. "Do you have common project that the two of you have been working on?" O'Brien asked lightly. NARCISO went on to account for her movements at the time of each breathing failure she is charged with causing. Nar- ciso explained that she was in the intensive care unit before patient John Herman suffered a fatal breathing failure only be- cause she was looking for a medication tray. When O'Brien asked her why she didn't look for the tray on her own floor, the witness simply replied, "I didn't think about it. I just in- stinctively went down to ICU (Intensive Care Unit)." Herman's death is the only murder count against Narciso after Federal Judge Philip Pratt dismissed some of the government's charges on the grounds of insufficient evidence. Narciso also faces four poison- ing charges in the breathing failures of patients Mark Ho- gan, John McCrery, Russell Fletcher and William Loesch. The co-defendant in the case, 32-year-old Leonora Perez, faces three counts of poisoning. Both nurses face 'a charge of conspiracy. - TONIGHT!
