Coach Herb Brown, General Manager Bob Kauffman and team counsel Oscar Feldman visited Barnes at the Cranston, R.I., Adult Correctional Institution Tuesday and found that Barnes is "making the best of his sit- latiion," a team spokesman said. "HE IS PLAYTNG a little bit of basket- ball and pursuing a way to finish up his college courses and get a degree," the sookesman said. The 6-foot-9 forward, who cost the Pistons '500,000 in last year's National Basketball Association dispersal draft, began serving a one-year sentence for probation violation on May 16. He will be eligible for parole again after four months. WHILE ON probation for assai'lting a for- mer Providence University t e a m m a t e, Barnes was arrested last Oct. 9 at Detroit Metropolitan Airport for carrying an un- loaded handgum in his Inggage. His siibse- 'sent legal ordeal, along with injuries. had a detrimental affect on Barnes' play last season. "Marvin realizes he didn't play lp to his feill otential last season and he's looking forward to playing this season," Kauffman said. "He's playing with the prison team now and he's in pretty good shape." Barnes played in 53 games for the Pistons last season, bt managed a scoring average of just 9.6 points a game. He was sidelined early in the season with a broken ankle and again at the end of the season with a frac- tured hand.
