OGLIVIE CA\ME to the Tigers in 1973 in a trade with the Boston Red Sox when 'he Bansls ped- pled Dick McATliffe to Bean- town. Even thw'nh he hit .285 in 1976 when ioi-r-s nlagued the Tiger outfield, Benji never made it as an evervday starter. This year was a different story for the native of Panama. In spring training, Tiger manager Ralph Houk decided that he must have the slender oufielder in his starting ,outfield. "Naturally, it is what I've looked forward to since I've been playing," Oglivie said last week before taking the field against Oakland. "I'm very hap- py to be playing every day and hope to make good use of it." OGLIVIE GOT off to a good' start this season and things were rolling right along until he injured his right shoulder diving for a fly ball in Milwaukee. In fact the Bengal rightfielder rip- ped six home runs-second high- est total on the Tigers-in April and May after blasting 15 last year in only 305 trips to the plate. "I'm usually a slow starter and I'm impressed that I've hit a couple of home runs so far," Oglivie said, "I'm more of a line drive hitter though." "I have a strong swing but putting me in the home run cate- gory would be wrong," Benji added. "I strive to make good contact and hit mostly line drives. The home runs will come -every now and then in a cer- tain situation I will go for a homer." ~p~I'4 ~fthe ?Sai4. KANSAS CITY-The Kansas City Kings acquired guard Lucius Allen from Los Angeles for forward Ollie Johnson and their 1978 first-round draft choice. Kings Coach Phil Johnson said the acquisition of Allen, an eight-year veteran from UCLA and a Kansas City native, would' "give us the ideal running mate to compliment Ron Boone and Otis Birdsong." "I feel that this trade gives us the strongest nucleus we have had since the franchise moved to Kansas City in 1972," said Joe Axelson, Kings president and general manager. "We hate to part with Ollie Johnson, who has made a great contribution to our club, but the need for three outstanding scoring guards made the move important to our future." "Lucius Allen has the ability to penetrate, score and run a club," added Johnson. "His experience, quickness and court savvy will undoubtedly strengthen our backcourt for the coming years. I hate to see Ollie Johnson go. He has given us 100 per cent all the time and has been great for theteam."
