The film, directed by Paul Schrader, famed for his blistering screenwriting in Taxi Driver, may not be a comedy, but last week's press confer- ence to launch the picture provided an ample lose of bleak humor-provided equally by the press corps' inarticulate and esoteric ramblings and the film's principals' often-arrogant wise- cracks. Obviously worn ragged by a fourteen-hour shoot- ing schedule, the cast, which include.s Kotto, Harvey Keitel, Richard Pryor and Ed Begley, Jr., appeared tired and punchy, answered dull questions blandly,.but still managed to smile for the cameras that recorded their receipt of the obligatory honoraria. DIRECTOR SCHRADER answered questions in a thoughtful and soft-spoken manner. Schrader, making his directorial debut with Blue Collar, ex- plained that the story, which concerns auto work- loud ers and union skullduggery, will mirror the in- and herent draam of the city of Detroit-the economic lenc and cultural imperatives of the automotive in- to b dustry, which helps to form the dramatic core "Do of the film, would be lost, he said, if Blue Collar of r was shot elsewhere. lowi Less gracefully, Richard Pryor spoke often and +n :Recordsin5rief a vutt 1 By GERARD PAPE Among the numerous classical LPs recently released, these three'come highly recommend- ed. Brahms, A German Requi- em, conducted by Herbert Von Karajan (Angel SB 3838) Von Karajan's rendition of Brahm's Requiem is superb, far sirpassing any other recording of this work in print, including his own previous recording. Von Rarajan sensitively and quite movingly brings out the passion and magnificence of this monumental work of Brahms' early career. Especially nice is the fact that this recording is available in SQ quadrophonic and sounds marvelous when heard in that fashion. Delius, Violin Concerto, Dou- ble Voncerto, conducted by Meredith Davies, Yehudi Men- uhin, violin (Angel S372 262) This recording of Delius' con- certo by Davies and violinist Ye- hudi Menuhin should do much to restore the undeservedly neg- lected Delius to popularity. Containing some of the most gorgeous music of the twentieth century, superbly played by Menuhin, et al., this recording of Delius' best compositions is an excellent way to be introduc- ed to the appreciation of the beauty and tranquility of nature inherent in his music, even when the pieces are not programatic- ally about nature, as in this recording. Bach, English Suites, Glenn Gould, piano (Columbia M2- 34478) Gould's performance of Bach's English Suites is nothing short of brilliant-Gould exhibits such amazing technique that at times one almost thinks he is playing the harpsichord instead of the piano. Gduld's playing is so crystal clear and his touch so evenly balanced t h a t every detail, theme andkcounter-theme of these remarkable suites comes through perfectly. With equal ease, Gould strokes the slow sen- sitive movements of the piece and flies with the energetic, al- most demonic fast movements. The range of virtuosity that Gould displays on this LP can only encourage Bach admirers to listen to this record and dis- cover that the music, when play- ed this expertly, is even greater than one first thought.
